Should I use my www. or no www. for SEO?

Should I set my preferred version on google for WWW. or no www? Should I create a .htaccess redirect from www. to no www? What do you guys recommend?

    To www or not www that is the question! In terms of SEO there is no difference to either - so it comes down to personal preference... A lot of folks prefer the www prefix as that may add a tiny bit more re-assurance to visitors... So depending on your niche and target audience I tend to choose one or the other and just go with it...

    The important thing is to make sure you use the canonicalization tag so if you opt to use the www version then make sure the link juice from other variations of the page is credited to the one you have chosen e.g. place this tag in the header:

    <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/blog" />

    Also yes I think its better to set the preference on the htaccess file - noting that with WP once you choose which www or without pre-fix within the admin area the entire site will reflects this with a redirect anyhow...

      You can pick either and go with it. There is no special advantage one has over the other. The important thing is consistency in using whichever you choose, anywhere e.g. in building backlinks, as Google regards each variation as a separate site and so you will be diluting your backlinks if you are alternating the use of each variation in building backlinks.

      Also, it is good practice to put in place a 301 redirect from the variation you do not pick to the variation you want to go with so that for example, if some visitors still use the other variation to search for your site, they can be redirected to your chosen variation. Also, your backlinks probably erroneously built from the variation you have not chosen can be "passed over" to the variation you have chosen and you thereby don't loose link juice.

      301 redirect can easily be put in place through your cpanel with your web host.

    There is an advantage to not using www as those are extra characters that don't match your keywords.

    It also looks clean and it's easier to read so people see your keywords right away (higher CTR from the SERPS).
