Hello everybody !

I need to optimize my company's website. I am new to SEO and I am currently learning how to do keyword research. From the various material that I studied, I am thinking about the following strategy and I wonder if it is the way to go :

1. competition analysis

I look at the competition's keywords with tools like :

Semrush
keyword density analyzers
Title and meta descriptions of the competitor's webpages

2. Getting keyword ideas

After the competition analysis, I create a seed list of keyword ideas obtained through various methods including :

keyword suggestion tools (ubersuggest etc.)
Brainstorms
Google related searches
industry forums, publications etc.
Google adwords keyword planner

3. Keywords competitiveness

At this step, after having created two keyword lists, one for my competition and one with my own keyword ideas. I analyze in the keyword planner the competitiveness of each keyword. I complement my analysis with a look at the SERP of the best keywords for a better idea of the competition (number of results, number of adwords, etc.)

4. Writing the website content

At this step, I can finally write the website content by injecting specific keywords of my list in each page.

Should I first find good keywords then write the content or write the content first, then inject the keywords ?

Thank you !

I would remove the bit about keyword density and using keyword planner's competition estimates as those are meant for Adwords advertisers.

I look for keywords first before writing content and I'd advise you to do the same.

    1. Find good keywords then write the content.
    2. You should pick high search volume and medium or low competition keywords.
    3. Avoid to choose one word keyword. It will be general, while choosing two or three words keywords will be good for conversion purpose.

As SEO Power suggested above, it is good practice to research appropriate keywords first and write content accordingly.

I would like to suggest you to include synonyms of your business terms before writing content like, if you have business term "mobile", include "smartphone", "cellphone" etc. in your content to rank for related keywords as well.

Thank you rozerr, KristinaRoy and SEO Power !

I see the point of writing your blog or landing page content according to your keywords but what about the homepage or the features pages of your website ? I have the feeling it would make more sense to write the website copy with the primary goal of presenting my company the best way possible, and to inject some keywords where I can. Am I completely wrong ?

No, I agree with you. Primary goal must be creating a user friendly website including eye-catching design and site structure. However, if you find places, where you can inject your targeted keywords without breaking the flow of your presentation, you should go for it.

I'm new to SEO as well. Keywords are most important as to the entry point of a particular campaign. You already have the ground work set up (you work there), I would try to think outside the box as far as what keywords to use taking into consideration what's on their site already. User Friendly as was stated already is the key while maintaining the integrity of what the company is ultimately trying to do.......WIN!
