how long will it take for them to register once they have been added?

      Google is reluctant to tell you how many backlinks it has found and their link: command is pants. The MI reported in the Sitemaps service is also understated.

      Yahoo siteexplorer will give you more links reported but it is over the top showing expired links and sites with little value.

      For a new link to be reported the site page carrying the link needs to be crawled by the search engine and then it needs to update its reporting - expect a 1 to 2 week delay before you see the links.

    Different search engines will display differing amounts of backlinks so you'll get a different answer when you query each one.

    I use a ~very~ handy Firefox Addon called "search status"

    SearchStatus | Firefox SEO Toolbar Extension

    You can see how many backlinks you have in Google, Yahoo, and MSN (though I'm not sure they've updated to Bing yet) with a single click.

    Read the description for all the other great stuff it does as well.

    I'm doing it also with Site Explorer - Search Results

    Just type in "link:http://yoursite.com"

    As said above not quite accurate, but better than Google, who won't tell you at all.

    If you want to know about your site detail on search engine like google then you should use google advande search operator like

    site:url of your site
    info:url of your site
    link:url of your site
    intitle:url of your site
    related:url of your site


    And you get all information regarding your site on search engine

    Google webmaster and bing webmaster is more correct for mine.

    Yahoo only shows like 6000 links, and google shows 8500. and bing 9200

    Okay, so I'm kind of new to this backlink stuff. Of what value is it to me to know from where the backlinks come that are linked to my site? If there is an advantage, how do I get more backlinks?
