Backlinks will always remain an integral part of overall seo game with other 200+ signals. They started Google+ author profiles, which they have discontinued in serps which is obvious that their social signal experiment failed because it can be gamed pretty easily.

Also, Google going after blog networks shows importance of backlinks. Such a big company have a dedicated setup of engineers who are manually going after PBNs to de-index them lol. They are here to stay in my opinion.

So if 100 people all searched the same thing but were given different websites to look at, how could we possibly be sure that our website is the one always being shown?

Here[s another idea, what if! the browser ranked these websites based on people rating them 1 - 10 on how informative it was, lower scores = lower hits to your website. What if the ranking was all based on the user and not the web master.

It sounds like the future to me? I swear everything is going to end in paid marketing.
In short, you're talking about user experience and rating, right? They are already using it as one of their signals which is known as "Dwell Time" and several other similar signals. Well, that can be easily gamed too with crowd-searching. More here: Does 'Crowdsearching' Work For SEO? Here Are My Results So Far - SEO Traffic Hacks by Terry Kyle

End of paid marketing? Google generates majority of its revenue from advertisements (adwords).

Won't happen, because then what will happen to their adwords revenue? If a website is automatically going to open, then who will click those ads? Those search results are just filler content for google, to make make money with adowrds, just like adsense or affiliate links are for webmasters.

I would have invented Google and Microsoft if I was born earlier.

AHA! SO! the new search result will be a panel on the right side of website with paid ads! holy shizza!

Check it out, the browser gives you a website. The browser has full control of hwo it displays its information. You can just create a framed panel on the right of the website. The website is resized to fit the screen. The user is given a direct answer and the option to choose a different result on the right side of paid advertisers.

This would give the browser efficient revenue on their ads!

"IF" is a funny word. Enough said!

I guess we'll know when backlinks lose their importance in the algorithm since Google will most likely discontinue all link-based algorithm updates. For now, backlinks are still very much important.

Backlinks will always play a factor in the rankings of a page in the Google Search Engine.

It is just ONE factor to rank a page. Not the only or most important factor.

The Quality of the backlink is what will always matter. The quality and the relevancy of the backlink is what ONLY matters.

There are other factors the search engines look for like Social Network Activity and Comments. Basically, the more activity is on your page, the better.

Google keep the user in mind at all times. With that being said, if you just focus on delivering the best content for the user - better rankings will come naturally.

Now that is the SEO of the future my friend!!

    I hope this helps!

I wish you the best of the best!

    Keep up the great work!

    Cheers!
