Why has my website disappeared from Google?

I'm at a loss... I've had my Skeptiko podcast/website for 7 years and never paid much attention to SEO because my rankings were always really high (at least for the very narrow keywords that I care about), but have noticed lately that my search position really sucks. I don't even rank #1 for the name of my site!

I've tried to educate myself about what I'm doing wrong and even hired an Odesk-er to help (total waste of time and money), but I'm not making any progress, or maybe have made things worse.

I've done some basic stuff like using Yoast in Wordpress, but not really sure where to even begin to start developing a plan to regain my search status.

Would greatly appreciate any suggestions/advise.

The website is good, but you need better On-Page optimization. For example:
    <meta name="description" content="Explore" /><meta name="keywords" content="" />
Is not a good optimization. A little more content would be great if you can place in the homepage. Keep the work up!

That might have helped in 2001 but Google isn't ranking pages via meta tags.

Not having a meta-description is actually an SEO technique that can create SERP descriptions targeting multiple variations of a keyword/s instead of a one size fits all static SERP description.

Adding more content isn't going to rank a page for an existing keyword.

The yoast SEO plugin is like that $0.25 kiddie ride in front of grocery stores. Sure it looks fun but doesn't really accomplish much.

Do you actually repeat what you say to yourself, or you just

thx, but I have to wonder if these are really that important. I mean, when I search for my site name it doesn't appear in the Google search: https://www.google.com/search?q=skeptiko

so I think something bigger is going on, but I have no idea what it is (unless I'm being punished for something a previous SEO contractor did).

    I just checked:
Adsense Banned Checker | Blacklist Check
Has Your AdSense Account Been Disabled? Banned from AdSense?

and they said my site is not delisted (big relief), but makes the mystery even more strange. why is my main page no longer showing up in Google search results?

Is everything fine over at Google Webmaster Tools?

thx for all the great suggestions. for anyone who stumbles across this:
          - webmastertools is quite accurate in the feedback it gives. I was told by one freelancer I hired that it take a while for google to re-crawl and therefore you can't rely on webmaster tools. this is not correct.

          - my problem required a change to my site index and a change to my htaccess file. I had to hire someone to do this.

          - I also wound up having to re-submit a bunch of pages thru webmaster tools. it's a bit of a pain, but totally works.

          thx again to all.

I don't think the chap is asking for some seo tips - he's trying to find out why his site has plummeted from Google.

You need to start doing the rounds of checks so you can find out what may of happened :

    Check Google Webmaster Tools
    Check Google Analytics
    Check backlink profile
Find out when the last Google update was etc

thx for this. started digging into Webmaster tools... I re-verified the site via a different method and after a couple of tries got it to take.

am still a newb with GA, but will dig into it.

When I perform a site: operator for your site I see there are 473 pages indexed ....

To name a few things ...

    1. Do all of those pages pass googles thin and duplicate content filters?
    2. Are the titles and meta descriptions for all of those pages unique with no duplication?
    3. Do all of those pages load fast, or are there long load times?

If not then you are likely penalized by panda....

On to your link profile ... I notice your site has 19,000 links from 850 referring domains...

To name a few things ...

    1. Are those links well distributed throughout all of those referring domains?
    2. Are those links well distributed between nofollow and dofollow?
    3. Is the anchor text of those links properly varied?

If not, then you are likely penalized by penguin.

thx very much for this suggestion. I looked into this and was lead to changing some stuff in htaccess to reduce the chances of Google accidentally picking up duplicate content. followed this article.

how long will it take in order to see if I'm on the right track with these changes?
