We're thinking of starting a Wordpress blog. Our main site is built on HTML instead of Wordpress.

Based on our experience, some people say that by putting your blog on a sub-domain your main domain will not be sharing its SEO authority into your sub-domain (unless linked).

How do you think we should structure our website so that our blog can get the most SEO benefit?

No... do not separate the content you publish on different websites. Pick one website and do that one really, really, really well. The old days of trying to trick Search Engines with these weird back-links and different websites is over.

Major search engines, like Google, really want to see you publishing really good articles on 1 domain, where you are the authority, and speaking to a niche. If you start separating content by sprinkling it over multiple domains you are only add more work, server costs, and headache + the possibility of actually hurting search engine optimization.

Publish in 1 place and public 1 good thing, instead of 10 "Mehhh" ones and you will be fine!

Generally main domain /blog if you will have moderated content. Otherwise generally subdomain.yoursite.com if you will have lesser moderated content.
