What type of backlinks do you need?

Hi there,

What type of backlinks do you really need to add some strength to your articles? I know the main craze at the moment is trying to link to high PR websites and ok I understand these must be good.

How about just normal related links? As far as backlinks go is it quantity or quality of the links. The reason I am asking is that it appears that just lots of links is what gets you to the top and wonder if 10 high PR links or say 30 any old backlinks would be better.

Also are backlinks only useful if they are do-follow or do they still count as a backlink if they are no-follow.

Hope someone can explain this for me.

Thanks

For me.... I try to get as many relevant (do-follow) backlinks as I can for link juice (better rankings), but any other backlinks i can get I will take for the traffic factor. Yes I want as many do-follow links as I can gather but no-follow links bring traffic just as well but do not count towards link juice.

Since high PR often (notice I didn't say always, but that's another discussion) relay more authority than lower PR links then it should be fairly obvious that they are highly coveted.

However, lesser PR links also have their place...to a point.

Personally, I'll take 10 PR6+ links over 100 PR1, PR2 links any day of the week.

Google puts a lot of stock into their antiquated PR system - especially for pages that have risen up to a PR6 or more. Those are very, very trusted pages (notice I didn't say sites).

There's been a lot of discussion over this issue ever since the notion of "do-follow" and "dont follow" was introduced. Personally, I know that for sites fresh out of the box, even no-follow links can help get a site indexed. As far as them helping any beyond that, I doubt they do much.

Hope this helps a little bit. I know that in the beginning the whole linking debate can be quite confusing and even "veterans" can bump heads over what they believe is really going on at times.

    Hi Moneyland,

It all depends on what your goals are. If your only goal is to get a little extra green line in your toolbar, or like bragging about your PageRank number, then you should definitely go for links from high PR pages. That will increase your PR but may not have much financial benefit.

If you goal is to increase targeted traffic to your website then you should focus on backlinks from relevant pages that have lots of traffic that will find your page relevant to their own interests.

The first goal gets you a little green line trophy, while the second goal gets you a little green in your pocket.

The best backlinks are high pr, .edu and .gov backlinks and then if your going for related traffic then get those blog comments and social bookmarking backlinks etc etc etc.

Build them all up and you will have a very strong article/site/page etc etc
