Can subdomains be shown in the search options?

I was wondering if having many subdomains for each niche, all connected to a main domain, would be a good idea.

I am trying to save some money while starting out, and I was wondering if subdomains have the same opportunities that main domains have, in terms of people ending up seeing the page when they want to.

For exmaple, if I have a graphic design niche website:
Would it be more beneficial for the website to be graphicdesign.com rather than xxx.graphicdesign.com?

I have never heard of anybody doing this before, so it is probably a stupid question. I know how to write attractive articles and web design, I just don't know much about search results .

subdomains are like a separate domain to the search engines. they can perform by them self but not going to get benefits from each other.

for you want i would say go for subdirectory or categories.

I would use categories as well, because sub-domains are indeed seen as separate websites.

There are a lot of theories about when to use subdirectories and when to use subdomains. So, which one is better? Whenever I'm in doubt, I like to see what Google has to say about it. Afterall, we are all looking for page ranking. Here's a great 2 minute video from Matt Cutts of Google. Even though it's a little outdated, I feel the principals still apply. Generally speaking if you want more popularity for your domain as a whole, choose categories or sub-directories.

Subdomains show up just fine in the search engines, but if it makes no difference to you because you are starting out, choose the easy way which is categories.
