Submitting Site Maps to sites you don't own

I'm trying to help a non-techy blogger learn SEO and grow their site. They are.... reluctant to give me information to the back end of their site, for which I don't blame them. But, they are also not understanding basic things like creating, and submitting, sitemaps.

Is there a way to submit a site map to Google on their behalf, without having to verify the website? Granted, this is partially self-serving as they do link to a good number of posts on one of my blogs. Unfortunately for me none of those links are being indexed by Google when you search for site:sitename.com

Any ideas? Or do I need to try keep trying to push them in the right direction?

Not giving you access to backend? So you can't make any on-site changes? Then they're not really taking this seriously and neither should you.

Leave the sitemap submission alone. As long as it's there, it's not necessary to manually submit it.

      Totally agree.
If this person doesn't trust you, then it's his loss.

Just have them install a Wordpress plugin that generates a sitemap. Google will find it next time they visit. Some of the plugins also notify Google as well. Try Yoast.

The answer is NO, the sitemap needs to be hosted on the same domain.

You could build strong external links pointing at pages you want indexed.

  • If they have a sitemap, have them create a google webmater tools account and submit it through that. I find it's the quickest way to get it indexed. That being said, Yoast will do it for them as well (as others have already pointed out).

I would LOVE to do this. But he's an older person, computer illiterate, set in his ways. Grandchild setup everything but is unavailable to help fix the rest of these issues.

It's not a huge deal, I was just trying to help both himself and me.

Thank you for your help all!
