Good day warriors.

In this article I'll show you why it's important to target long tail keywords, and how this can affect your target traffic for your site and how doing this can possibly get you more leads.

Before you start creating content for your site you should do some research beforehand, but relying on only the most popular search terms could make it difficult to get your website seen by potential clients.

First for all, what's a long tail keyword?

Well, it consist of three words or more for example:

"how to lose 10 pounds in a week" or "how to buy a used car from a private seller"

These are each considered long-tail keywords as compared to trying to rank for the much more competitive search terms "weight loss " or "used cars".

You wont get the traffic as much as weight loss or used cars but sure there's less competition and most important a better conversions.

So what's the strategy?

The strategy is to get ranked number 1 for hundreds or more long-tail keywords. In most cases, you'll have happier, higher converting visitors, and a lower bounce rate. Sometimes you 'll be ranking for these long-tail keywords without even knowing it. However, this creates opportunity for you to snatch these top spots.

Tools to consider:
Google start to give out direct answers to questions as searches are becoming more of a long-tail question like currency conversions, definitions, weather, math, etc. That's the power of the long-tail resurgence.

I hope this helps.

This is a very good point. In fact i've seen a lot of big websites still using this strategy, and applying long tail keywords on description, titles etc.
That time when keywords were something so uncommon that you could rank for short tail are long gone. Now the competition is fierce.

I personally see things this way : i would rather rank a bunch of long tail keywords that won't bring that much traffic but it's possible to do and i could always rank one more, than focusing on one big keyword and spamming it so much that i would actually hurt my rank.
It look so much more natural to have long tail keywords !
And while spammers and black hats will focus on those big ones and gambling with that ( because let's be honest, you won't trick search engines for ever) , you rock these puppies out and steadily but surely increase overall website rank, and that is winning.

Note: Keep in mind that these days, the numbers of backlinks is nothing compared with quality. 10 quality ones worth more than 1000 poor quality

Apart from the fact that long tail keywords are easier to rank, they are also more likely to convert better because long tail keywords are used by searchers late in the buying cycle.

true, long-tail keywords help to focus more on qualified buyers, which will boost conversion rates, and possibly increase ROI.

Great article. The secret to long tail keywords is not to expect a huge traffic from any one page. But if you have hundreds or thousands pages optimized and as they improve in rank, your page views will increase.

Long tail keywords are the one fastest way to drive traffic as they can rank in a short time for less competitors. In SEO long tail works for long time and short keyword is less time because any competitor can defend you at any stage.

long tail keywords are less competitive, this is obvious. Short keywords will turn out those websites which are already very old and high domain authority, so for your website as it is new cant compete with those website, so you should target long keywords.

Long-tail keywords can lend themselves to higher click-through rates (CTR) and conversion rates. It expands to target more users than the normal approach where the focus is only on the root keywords.

Long tail keywords are less competitive as compared to 2-3 words keywords. I always suggest clients to consider both long as well as main keywords for their business. Long tail keywords are more focussed one and yield higher conversion rate. Traffic you will not get much, but end result is very satisfying one.

Thank you all for your great contributions. As a beginner marketer without a big budget to compete for the most competitive keywords, you’ll have to take a different way to success, and that's the long-tail keywords way.

Long tail keywords are certainly the best way to go in most situations.
They are a lot easier to rank for and to stay ranked high.

Another thing, when ranking for long tail keywords you are building up your main keyword list.

If you have a weight loss site and are working on the keywords "fast weight loss" "weight loss for older women" "weight loss without dieting" "how to be successful with your weight loss" you are building up the keyword "weight loss" to be very powerful and in time you can be the authority that can hold top spots for competitive keywords.

Keep in mind that we need to optimize our target pages properly: headline (h1), subheadings(h2,h3...etc), main content, images, meta data..and by targeting several keywords in the title and content of a post can help rank our pages for several phrases with just one post.

This is very informative. All the people who have posted in this thread cannot be wrong, so thanks guys. I will certainly search for long tail keywords from now on.

I'm assuming that the longer the keyword, the less volume of monthly searches?
Maybe the lower competition makes up for this?

long tail - short tail it don't matter these days if your using keyword planner

what matters is Domain Authority and commercial intent

two easy things to determine when you actually look at search results

I have case studies that contradicts most of long tail discussions I see being repeated over and over without actual studies

I tested millions and millions of keywords to verify this

you won't find your answers in keyword planner these days when everyone else is looking for the same solution

saturation is happening if everyone is using the same metrics

its time to start thinking out of the box

commercial intent - how about looking at how many bidders who pay for advertising
they can't make money if the keywords don't convert, they have done all the work for you for this

Domain Authority - if only big sites dominate that particular long tail keyword kiss your chances good bye for ranking

everyone here repeats the same stuff over and over and no one is thinking out of the box

no wonder people have a hard time making money or ranking

LTK acutally takes time to gain traffic to your post but after all it's a best practice to use LTKs as we can't outrank those site with heavy domain authority.

long tail or short tail first look at who is using those keywords, in general I have to agree long tail is best

in addition using long tail many times Google ranks them in multiple forms taking out the bits it needs to meet the users search

so you end up with a lot more bang for your buck with less effort
