book publishing, navigation and anchor text

Consider an application that publishes book text. We want long tail search referrals for terms based on deep pages. But we also want to rank our top pages, in this case, the book's table of contents. All of the deep pages link back to the Table of Contents through a navigation bar item that says 'TOC'. This is not very descriptive anchor text but there is no room for long titles here.

I can't change the text in the navigation area but I could add another link on the page with better anchor text such as "Bookname - Table of Contents"? Would this build more/better rank for the TOC page? Is it bad practice to have two links to the same target page on the same source page?

Having multiple anchor-text on one page pointing to a 2nd page is confusing, IMO it's diluting any effort.

You could always iframe the nav links & use regular followed internal links in the content on the keywords you want to target.

BTW, you might consider researching how an SEO silo works. This is a paid forum here but it's mostly dedicated to SEO silos & building private link networks.

As for the multiple anchors, I don't want to lose the hierarchy that the navigate system gives users (or bots) but the space for long descriptive context sensitive anchor texts just isn't there. However, the SILO path system will also help the bots understand flow...

Actually, that's what started this whole rework. Every page now has a unique SILO path now even though the content is dynamic. I will look at that forum and post about the virtual SILO technique I'm experimenting with in another thread. I have some questions about that.

    Thanks again.

Registration to that link was disabled. I have read a good bit on SILOS tho.
