Should I keep away from ABUSED sites for backlinks?

I just found a follow edu site... it is COMPLETELY OVERRUN by ridiculous backlinking. People arent even trying to be discrete lol.

Should I even bother posting links there? I'm backlinking for my main site, so I wouldn't want it to be penalized for hanging out with all the bad backlinkers... Is that even possible?

According to various posts from Matt Cutts (of Google) - webmasters are NOT penalized for GETTING links FROM bad neighborhoods (unless they get 1000's per day - then a review might be triggered). They are penalized for GIVING a link TO a bad neighborhood.

The basic concept is that webmasters aren't supposed to be penalized for things that their competitors could do to them.

So - if you believe the unofficial (yet official) word from Cutts, no, you won't be penalized. The worst that will happen is that Google will discount the link, making it worthless for you SEO-wise. Considering that the site is as "overrun" as you say, the links from that site are probably already discounted anyway, making it unlikely that it is worth your time...

    Just my thoughts.

    Regards, Georgetta

Great information Georgetta and taken straight from the horses mouth so to speak too!

.edu backlinks are actually really powerfull (not as powerfull as they use to be however). Get a few of these under your belt and your rankings should skyrocket!

The issue is more about your time than the penalty to a website. There wouldnt be a penalty per se, but if that .edu's webmaster gets the bulletin from the .edu Webmasters society or club or whatever they belong to - advising that all their other friends sites are getting overrun by backlink spammers. If they then remove commentting or the original content - the next time the google bot goes back and doesnt find your link - it gets removed.

        depends on your strategy.

most precious commodity = your time ... spend wisely.

Thanks for the advice everybody. About to drop a link...

Is there a way to tell if google discounted the links on their side?
