SEO consists of two basic elements: the on-page seo and the off-page seo.

On-page seo is writing good content that adds value to your users and use keywords wisely. Avoid stuffing the keywords as it can be seen as spam. Try to use a main keyword and some SLI keywords (sematically related). The main keyword should be in your first sentence and in the last paragraph, also 1-2 times in the body.

Off-page seo is building backlinks to your site using blogs, forums, 2.0 sites, social media, all you can find. Some people use automatic software like SeNuke to create backlinks, if you use it wisely it can be helpful, but many of the backlinks created that way eventaully get deleted and there's also a chance to get labeled as a spammer by search engines. You can either create your backlinks manually or outsource it. The cheap alternative is Fiverr, but not always the quality one: there are many people using SeNuke and similar software to do the job.
While creating backlinks, avoid using repetitive anchor keywords, this practice can get you banned from search engines.

I totally agree with ab1cor about on page SEO...good quality content includes not just mostly pics and little text. Try to have around 200 words or more targeting you keyword...each different page should target only 1 keyword so Google doesn't get confused what the page is mainly about. Also embed a video in your page. Google owns Youtube so this is very important.

For off page SEO i also agree using software to get 1,000 links in one day will throw up a flag with Google so build your links the natural gradual way. Never submit to paid directories or server link farms. Guest blogging won't work unless the blog is revelant to your site as Google's algorithm picks up on this. Linking between several domains you own on the same domain server will also give a bad signal to Google. Play it safe and submit to high quality social media sites.

As a newbie you should follow these basic tips of SEO.
    1. Do Keyword Research:
Keyword Research is one of the most important activity of SEO. Keyword research is important because both the search engine and users depend upon keyword for finding your website. Choose the right keyword for your brand and website.
    2. Keyword Density
Keyword density must be between 2-4%. This means that if you are writing 800 words article then your keywords should not be repeated more than 3-4 times in each 100 words block. If your keyword density is more than 5% then Google will penalize you.
    3. Optimize Page Titles & Meta Description
Every page on your website should have a unique title tag and it should be less than 70 characters. Similarly Meta description of your post should be between 150-160 characters. This is important because search engines reads meta description for understanding the content in a post,
    4. Say No To Duplicate Content
Try to create unique content rathr than coping others.
    5. Create XML Sitemap
A sitemap is a map of all the URLs in your entire website, listed in hierarchical order. Do create a sitemap. By creating XML Sitemap of your blog you are helping search engines to better index your blog
    6. Do Not Use Broken Links
    7. Increase Backlinks

Their is alot to mention and alot you will learn as you go, but the most important thing of all, is your (on-page) SEO every webmaster has to get this bit right, kind of the bread and butter of the webpage, everything from meta tags, content, keywords, keyword density, image tags, take your time, and get this bit done properly, then move on to (off-page) no point building backlinks or doing anything (off-page) if your (on-page) is not optimised

Little note, the above post about longtail keywords, completley agree, longtail keywords should be your focus point through the process, and patience is key with SEO

Its going to be frastrating, we have all been through it, but the results are worth every painstaking minute we carry out seo in the end

    Goodluck mate
