Keyword synonyms

Next question... how good are search engine synonyms and should I manually help things along? I can immediately think of three areas where I could use keyword synonyms:
1) More than one word in English.
e.g. "global X" "world X"
2) British English vs. American English
e.g. "Mobile Phone" vs. "Cellphone"
3) Foriegn Languages
While it would be impossible to keyword every language, most people know what counties they're getting traffic from (or they should be!).
e.g. "world map" vs. "mapa del mundo"
In my copy, I usually try to craft a few variations on my key subjects, but wondered if I should do more to help search engines along?
