Does a domain keep it's SEO value if expired?

I am going to buy an expired domain that had some PR and backlinks to the home page. It has just expired and I can now register it, but will it keep the SEO value from the search engines perspective?

    It depends how long it has been offline, usually it will retain some of the value. If you keep the links the same or use 302 redirects to divert the old links to new pages you will gradually increase the value again.

    It will keep its SEO until it is re-spidered, then it will drop off a cliff if the same content isnt there.

    However, the importance of aged domains is in the backlinks and not the SEO score, so make sure what you get has a high backlink count and that will slowly diminish over time only if the linking sites aver check their links - its not dependent on the content in any way.

    It should keep its value as long as the old links and such stay in place. It'd be best to buy it and get some content on there as soon as possible..If people discover the old links are broken, they'll often remove them. If you get something up there before then, you'll keep those!

    Here's the problem with expired domains...they go into the pool for auction up to 2 months. During this time Google will crawl it and the ranking will drop like a rock. Wouldn't risk it.

    People use such domains to build blog networks to rank their sites, so I think they keep their SEO value, but only a small part of it. Expiring domains have the highest SEO value because they haven't expired. You can get them on sites like godaddy auctions.

    Totally depends. It'll only drop if there is no activity for a long time though so there's a chance that it won't drop that low if it just expired recently. Everything depends on how Google reviews it.

      I have revived many domains for a PBN. Upon added wordpress and content to the site they get indexed quite fast.

      I have also purchased a couple and redirected 301 to domain with catchy url and started building on them.

    Forget about PR... google updates it once or twice a year... that's how important PR is to them.
    You want to concentrate on backlink profile. After update your PR will probably fall down, but that isn't important, since you still have a links that points to your domain. You have a plugin that "revives" linkjuice that previously pointed to your site... and that's it!

      Actually, Google updates PR every single day. They just do not publish it publicly. They used to publish it about 4 times a year, but they have not done so in almost a year and a half now. I would not expect any more public updates going forward.

      To say that PR is not important to Google is just silly. It is so important that they stopped releasing the data to keep people from taking advantage of it.

    I had one with a PR 2 awhile ago, I've haven't used it (it wasn't to profitable) and it lost its PR in few months. I guess ones it decrease its popularity in terms of inbound links and searches then the PR is gone.

    Even if the domain expires the SEO value for that domain doesnot have any effect. Take a note that expired domain when bought again the backlinks and SEO value in terms of Google remains the same..

    Yes, as long as the backlinks are still live.

    Just make sure your new site is relevant enough to the backlinks coming in and you'll do fine. Relevancy of backlinks are getting way more important lately
