Starting a local SEO Service

Hello everyone.

I am palnning to start some Internet Marketing related services in my country which is Sri Lanka. I am planning to build a website.

I have some questions regarding this>

1. I am wondering whether to go for a .com domain or a local domain. In my case it is .lk I am mainly aiming to provide SEO services here.

2. I am confused as to whether try to rank globally or just focus to rank well in local search results.
3. I know, Google webmaster tools allows us to target the location and language. Therefore, I can go for a .com domain and target to my native country.

4. Or create a local ccTDL i.e .lk coz Google now gives preference to local searches.

I am not sure which one will be more effective. Please give me suggestions in this regards.

      If you are starting for SEO services, you must know where you have look for domain. Even you don't, there are various options available on Google for looking the domain availability.

      There are benefits to going both ways, so ultimately i'd tell you to choose a name that you can buy the .com and the .lk for. If your goal is really local, then some there may trust the .lk domain more and it will be easier to rank for locally.

      If I had to pick only one though, it would be the .lk since you could probably get a better domain name and show folks you're local to them at the same time.

      Depends, are you targeting customers from Sri Lanka or World Wide or Western countries?
      I ask because frankly if i'm a customer in USA for example i would like to see how good you are at ranking .com, .net etc. I'm not interested in what you can do in Sri Lanka....

    Since you are aiming locally, I would prefer the local domain if it were me. Dot com is very broad and usually domain names are not available anymore since it has been used/bought by other people. I find local websites more user-friendly too.

    Start local for sure. It's much easier to start small and expand from there.

    Once your clients start ranking locally, their overall site will gain enough traction and visits to start competing on a global level.

    Also, aim for local "long-tail keywords" and you'll see faster results.

    1. if going local... always look for the local extensions (in your case .lk) - also when researching competition for keywords do an advanced search for exact phrase with your local and/or language filters...

    2.Local researches if offer is considered to be local... if they offer something worldwide... then worldwide

    If your main clientele are local, then for sure get the .lk domain. If and once you decide to go international, push to .com. I'd buy both domains right now to be safe.

    I would reccomend pointing your mainsite to a host with a .com because if you ever should want to upscale your business you can do so easily.

    You can always get a 301 redirect using your local domain however

    I Have done the same as you! Read the following Message: IMPORTANT

    Google's Algorithm is specialize for locally search results. Try to type "restaurant" in the search engine and you'll see restaurants in the local area.

    What that means is that for local search engine optimization you can definitely use local therms. BUT when your client is international focused you should NOT use any local extensions at all..

    Try a Domain name finder.. Type it in Google and you'll find a couple of them..

    Of course go with a local domain and write in Local languages (if different from English!). You can then create an English version later if you decide to go global!
