Do you think there is any benefit in linking to authoritative sites.

Example, I have a Black Ops II game page for example, would linking to the official site from the game page and possible also thinking about linking to Wikipedia (Black Ops II page) play any extra Seo weight in rankings, I plan to do follow the links.

I just got this nagging feeling that Google would place emphasis on this, as one important ranking factors, as it shows authoritativeness on the subject, it also shows trust as Google is aware which sites are official, as it always lists them first when I look.

I don't know where I got this idea from, probably read it, just wondering what your thoughts were on this?

Cheers

Alex

Getting do follow links to our website is an important task to improve the page rank, but do follow also works for the traffic. So both are important.

The question was about giving backlinks to authority sites, not getting them from authority sites, people!

I have not done tests. But I have pages that do and pages that do not, and I've seen no difference.

Maybe if I tested, I'd see. But results so far do not motivate me to test.

So, I'm hoping someone who's tested this thoroughly will be kind and share.

I think most have missed my point, i am not looking for pagerank links, i am looking to pass pagerank to top sites, going to do it anyway i think, as it is useful.

I suppose i am asking a question only Google knows, which is pretty pointless in retrospect.

Do follow links are beneficial if its coming to your website but I am not sure if it is useful the other way around. Haven't tried it yet so update us if it did any good to your website. Good luck!

If you have just started a new blog and want Google spiders to reach your blog quickly, and index your fresh content right after you published it, you might need to put some dofollow links toward your site. Crawlers will follow those links and will index it as soon as possible, in case they are coming from highly ranked sources. High quality dofollow links ensure that you will be going to make the most out of your blogging efforts.

Quoting from the original Google paper, PageRank is defined like this:

We assume page A has pages T1...Tn which point to it (i.e., are citations). The parameter d is a damping factor which can be set between 0 and 1. We usually set d to 0.85. There are more details about d in the next section. Also C(A) is defined as the number of links going out of page A. The PageRank of a page A is given as follows:

      PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + ... + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))

Note that the PageRanks form a probability distribution over web pages, so the sum of all web pages' PageRanks will be one.

PageRank or PR(A) can be calculated using a simple iterative algorithm, and corresponds to the principal eigenvector of the normalized link matrix of the web.

but that's not too helpful so let's break it down into sections.

PR(Tn) - Each page has a notion of its own self-importance. That's "PR(T1)" for the first page in the web all the way up to "PR(Tn)" for the last page
C(Tn) - Each page spreads its vote out evenly amongst all of it's outgoing links. The count, or number, of outgoing links for page 1 is "C(T1)", "C(Tn)" for page n, and so on for all pages.
PR(Tn)/C(Tn) - so if our page (page A) has a backlink from page "n" the share of the vote page A will get is "PR(Tn)/C(Tn)"
d(... - All these fractions of votes are added together but, to stop the other pages having too much influence, this total vote is "damped down" by multiplying it by 0.85 (the factor "d")
(1 - d) - The (1 - d) bit at the beginning is a bit of probability math magic so the "sum of all web pages' PageRanks will be one": it adds in the bit lost by the d(.... It also means that if a page has no links to it (no backlinks) even then it will still get a small PR of 0.15 (i.e. 1 - 0.85). (Aside: the Google paper says "the sum of all pages" but they mean the "the normalised sum" - otherwise known as "the average" to you and me.

BOTTOM LINE: When you give do follow links to other websites from your website, C(Ti) goes up. So the value of backlinks from one page of your site to other pages of your site, goes down.

Didn't get it? Look at formula again or search "page rank algorithm" in google.

Dofollow links allow search engines to follow them and reach them our website. If webmaster tool linking them back to you with this link both search engine and user will be able to follow you.

Actually I linked one of the website to authoritative website for few terms. But I didn't notice any improve in ranking or anything as such.

But I think we shouldn't link to many authoritative website, as page link juice will also pass.

Wow, seems like a lot of people don't read / understand what the OP is asking.

From what I heard, it will help to link out to other sites that are strongly related to your niche. Relevancy is key.

I figured the same, i also noticed IMDB do this on all pages, labeling the keyword as "Official Site" as one of their secondary <H2> Tags.

Pretty sure it would help, also might make Google understand the nature of the page more, should it be struggling to define what the page is about, only a theory, but someone i reckon might have advantages.
