homepage keyword optimization

So i'm starting a new niche site. And I found my keyword. I though that optimizing my keyword on my homepage was crucial since it's the top level domain.

However, I just checked out YOAST page: https://yoast.com/homepage-seo/

He basically says, to NOT try and rank any keyword on the homepage.

Curious to hear what people think and if anyone can point or link to good examples?

Thanks!

    elzorro,
    Here's the deal on that--
Typically the home page is the strongest page of a website because that specific URL (vs. and interior URL) is the one that gets the most links (directory sites and other references) and links are what help a page rank for the words that are most applicable to it. In addition, that home page often is optimized (to a degree) for the term in question--the term may be in the title and in the copy on that page. Yoast is right in that an interior page should be the one that you focus on for ranking a specific product or service and after some time and effort, it usually will be and the home page is then optimized for a broader, category-type term.

I would normally choose a few relatively tough keyphrases for the homepage.. Something like "Linux Web Hosting - cPanel Hosting Packages from HostingCompany"...Then, my inner pages would target specific terms related to hosting.. One page might be "Cheap Web Hosting" and another page might be "Wordpress Web Hosting"..so on and so fourth, the goal would be to make hundreds (even thousands) of pages like this.
