Subdomains SEO Pros and Cons

I have a rather benign domain of http://1nova.com that used to be my personal domain but now acts as a gateway to other sites and as my spam email address.
A friend would like to use a subdomain off that domain to start a blog. He believes that the age of the domain is going to be beneficial to him. I say yes it will be, but only in the short term. I believe that in the long term he is better off buying his own domain and going from there.
Since I don't really want to be associated with his site, what, if any, SEO benefits or penalties will the main domain see from his sub-domain? If he buys a spammy SEO backlink package from Fiverr for the sub-domain, will that hurt the main domain? If he somehow manages to score a link from say Wikipedia, will that benefit carry over to the main domain?
And I guess the question goes the other way. If I decide to do something more with this domain, what benefits or penalties can he reasonably expect in the same scenarios?
