How can I use an exact match domain name to drive customers to my main site? How does that work exactly? Thanks.

This was actually a method used before to rank easier in search engines for a specific keyword term.

For example if you wanted to be in the top 10 in Google for the keyword term Running Shoes then you would see if you can get your hands on RunningShoes.com if not maybe try to get the .net or .org version.

This use to give you and insane boosts in the rankings, it may still do but not as much after all the Google updates. I still think it makes sense to get a domain the describes what your site is going to be about but also now you have to make sure you have extremely quality content to rank effectively.

But of course to driver traffic to your main site you would link to it from the exact match domain site you create.

This is probably the best way to sum up how the exact match domain traffic works.

what he said.... don't matter that much anymore.... if you had the exact same links, age, etc etc... yes you would win out with exact match.... otherwise I find its all about content and site age...

Exact match domains (EMDs) aren't nearly as powerful as they used to be. I do a lot of consulting for brands and we use EMDs as micro sites for offline advertising campaigns.

When the campaign is done we will 301 the EMD into the proper landing page on the website.

You're better off choosing a domain name that relates to your business name. EMDs run too much risk of over optimization for larger websites.

My suggestion would be to develop a separate site on the EMD. It's true that EMD's don't get as much credit as they used to. But, if you develop and optimize it, then build links to it..It can still rank for the term. I'd optimize it around what it matches and then put advertisements/links on it to your money site. If possible, host it on a separate IP as well

You can use an exact match domain the same way you can use other types of domain names. But there is no special benefit in using exact match domains anymore.

This method is a bit dated now after recent Google algorithm changes, but generally speaking including the keyword within the domain does help just for branding purposes.

Here s the thing with exact match Domain's. They way I believe it did work is that the URL was split. there was the domain name domain.com and then there was the pointing portion of the domain /title-of-article. The domain name had value, and the rest of the URL had value.

Today, its the URL as a whole domain.com/title-of-article that has value. As mentioned about the only reason I see to use an exact match domain would be for BRANDING purposes.

Best practices today suggest that you use the keyword ONE time in the URL. so if your URL is keyword.com and then you write an article about keyword. you really do not want an article URL to look like: keyword.com/article-about-keyword.

So if you are using EMD's you really have to start paying attention to the overall URL. I personally think it gets to be a pain in the butt real fast. I personally prefer to have a non matching Domain so that i can introduce the keyword as needed in the URL.

In the past EMDs were like gems and you were able to boost your traffic in no time. But as soon as people start chasing after just domain names and start spoiling the net (same as using meta keywords few years back) so Google stopped giving any special weightage to them and they are now just treated as normal domains imo.
