Just had a question that I wanted to poll out to you all:

When starting a new niche site, how much Page Authority in the top 10 spots are you willing to compete against?? What numbers do you need to see for you to feel comfortable diving in??
#authority #page #threshold

Ah, I see. So regardless of page authority, if you are able to land an exact match URL you go for it? Even if the top 3 spots are ~40?

eh... exact matches don't matter too much anymore... I base on domain age... if I can get 5+ years on the competition and its in the same ballpark of pa and da... ya id say go for it.... unless your competition is just stupid like keyword "real estate" or something like that...

Gotcha. I'm confused on how you get 5+ years on the competition though for those of us that are trying to start our first niche sites haha

Page Authority doesn't really tell you much of anything about the competition level. If you are using a PA threshold, you are probably skipping over a lot of great opportunities.

Hmm I may have been under the wrong impression this whole time then haha. I started to get into a bad habit of being intimidated by sites that are ranking in the top 10 and have a high page authority.

Is this intimidation appropriate, or am I putting too much emphasis on high ranking site's Page Authority?

You are putting too much emphasis on it.

A few reasons... Page Authority is based on Moz's link database in OpenSite Explorer. It is not the best at finding and indexing links. That makes it highly inaccurate sometimes. PA, as well as TF, CF, PR, or any other metric you want to try looking at does not take into account the anchor text of the incoming internal or external links. A webpage may have a really high PA, but not really be targeting the keyword in question at all.

If you want to look at it, fine. Just keep those things in mind. You need to dig a little deeper.

You're right my friend. I do need to dig deeper haha.

Another quick question: During my keyword research, I often encounter pages that are single articles that are part of a larger domain with a high domain authority. If I plan to make a site with much more content and detail than said ranking page, is it typically pretty difficult to outrank these single article pages simply due to their high Domain Authority?

Domain Authority is not a ranking factor either.

Again, you need to dig deeper into what is going on.
