Backlinks Advice

I know my site is good because I get emails almost every day thanking me for the great info and content. But, for the life of me, I cannot get any backlinks. Well, I have a few - a very few considering my traffic and the quantity of good content that I have. And considering how well-liked my site is by my readers, I just don't understand why more people aren't backlinking to me.

Anyway, I need a BackLinking 101. Nothing I've tried really works. Twittering gets me hits but no links. I've tried writing to related sites and no one writes me back. Plus, there aren't that many sites like mine anyway...Anyway, I'm at a loss. I don't know how people do it...

One other question: does Google only count the backlinks that are in the Google Webmaster Tools?

      Write some articles or post on some forums related to your site.

    You say that there arnt many sites like yours and if you ment in your niche then you need to look more at your target demographic. Then target those people rather than the exact niche for blog comments/forum posts and even articles.

    In regards to your question the answer is no!

    Oh and you were asking why people weren't backlinking to your site... well maybe because they don't know how to. Not everyone is as clever as us here.

    Provide them with some html coded banners/images/badges... even just plain links to place on their facebook profiles, twitters, myspaces, forum profiles even their own sites. Plus you could add a social bookmarking links so that they can easily do all of the above to each post individually (wordpress has one of these i think).

    As i see, you need more communication with website in the same niche. Post or comment on these websites, you got noticed by them.

    Backlinks from the same topic website does count. At the same time, you become popular.

    You need to be active about backlinks. People will link to you over time, but go and seek those juicy backlinks yourself.

    And you don't need to pay for those today. With the web 20, it has never been easier.

      If people are actually giving you unsolicited positive feedback, then you have generated goodwill. Have you thought of just asking them if they could link to you if they own web sites?

    According to my experiments Google counts links even if they are not listed in Webmaster Tools.
