So I recently was playing with landing pages, and added abunch to my website. Well it got a little out of hand and I now have like 600,000 page 404 error pages.... How do I delete them all so that google will not recognize them as 600,000 page errors on my website.... IT shows on my webmaster tools, but how do you fix the issue so google likes it?

  • Wow, that is quite the accomplishment. I would hope that you have a backup of your work from before you started messing with landing pages. If you restore that backup, you should be good to go. Otherwise, it will be a very long and arduous task to fix all of that.

Were they all put into one specific folder? If so, you might be able to use some short .htaccess code to tell Google to forget about the directory. I'm not much of an .htaccess writer myself so you would need to find someone who knows what kind of code to use. Otherwise, not realy sure. But, that's a heck of allot of pages, lol!

Where are these pages being linked from? If you're running on Wordpress just use a 301 plugin like Link Juice Keeper (search on your Wordpress plugin tab) to mass 301 every dead link to your homepage

Not a good idea to re-direct 600,000 pages to your homepage especially if they were thin landing pages mainly used for testing.

Installing a custom 404 would be a better solution for this person, anybody capable of that many 404's is going to have quite a few more in the future, a 404 custom, will help you a lot!

    600,000? lol that's insane.

You might want to set up a subdomain in the future and build/test them from there if you're going to do them again. Then you can just delete the subdomain.

if they are dead and you wont be bringing those up again, remove those linking to those pages then mark as fixed in webmaster tools.
