Here is a hypothetical question, I know it is crazy, but what would be the main steps behind ranking on the first page of Google for a super high competition keyword like "jewelry"?

Is this something you're born into, do you need to shell out 100 grand a year, do you need friends at Google, or what?

I've been studying SEO for a while now and want to know the real deal.

Rank locally listings 4 and 5 for me are local jewelers, I just looked from "Canada" and the local listings didn't start till page 2, and the looked from Cali and local listings didn't start til page 3. (btw I am not considering pack listings but serp listings )

But now that I have mentioned pack listings that puts you possible in #4 if you look at it that way!

But you want results in a term like that I would shoot for local first.

I ranked sexy jewelry on Google and website is under 2nd position of my clients , if you want to get rank with those higher key terms then simple your website must need strong seo effort to get you into page one .

It's not easy as it's seems to think it take time and proper strategies plan to implement on your website for better rank .

You will never rank for "jewelry" or any keyword with that much competition even if you have friends working for Google. Why? Because you need to have a site worthy of a first page placement for that keyword which you cannot produce unless you have a large jewelry business.

So, the only real answer is, go out, spend millions(billions?) of dollars, become the next
Daniel's, Jared, Amazon, Zales, Robbins Brothers, Kay, Tiffany's, Macy's, etc. Easy!

Now if one is talking about ranking for something like
affordable jewelry in buffalo ny, that's another story.

A one word ranking is impossible to obtain especially for a competitive word like that. You should focus you attention on obtaining a top local ranking.

    Hypothetically?

    - Aged Relevant Domain
    - Loads of editorial links
    - Insanely powerful PBN
    - Huge authoritative site

    And that's the bare minimum.

The only problem is, hypothetically I'd choose a much more focused buyer keyword like princess cut diamond rings rather than just jewelry.

I agree, local ranking is best. Unless you have your own jewelry company with lots of reputation, so you can compete with the large chains of jewelry stores.

Generic keyword no longer worth, try to target "buy jewellery online" or "buy discounted jewellery" rather than just single word jewellery.

You have to invest huge money to rank single word and you will not getting the buyers from them. If you really want to promote your website on jewellery related keywords then must target buyer keywords or long tail keywords.

Jewerly keyword alone will be hard to rank, although you have lot of generic keywords with jewerly in it that you can use that will be easier to rank.

Why would you just want to rank for that keyword? It's a bit broad. Go deeper and get more buyers.
