Just wondering if the SEO landscape for affiliate sites is still favorable. It's been awhile since I've built a site for marketing affiliate products and looking to get started again. Anyone ranked an affiliate site lately? Thanks.

Steve.

I'm not having problems. But I also don't let Google know I have an affiliate site. It can be a kiss of death for Google to view your site as nuisance spam - someone skimming off money from hard working merchants, which is how Google unfortunately views a lot of affiliate sites.

Thanks for responding. How is it that you "don't let Google know..."? Is that just a matter of hiding your affiliate links? Btw, what types of sites are working for you, single product focused(domain, review, etc), or larger, more authoritative sites with related generic phrases and multiple product reviews? Or is there another format that you're using? Thanks.

All types of affiliate sites. When I find a product / merchant that converts I may create one product sites, review sites, coupon sites, closely related issue sites, a big authority site, etc. There is one product for which I now have more then 30 sites, each of which uses my scripts to remove affiliate links from pages. Unlike a merchant who is usually tied to one domain there is a lot of flexibility for affiliates and an opportunity to test different page lengths, keyword densities, etc., for SEO

this is funny.. how exactly are you hiding the fact that you are running an affiliate site?

As for the OP question I have more than a few Affiliate sites. I don't mask the links, I don't play stupid games, I don't even do redirects. and I get ranked just fine. Good content and good marketing = sales. the game will never change.

Every day it becomes harder as more and more people start working on their Affiliate sites.. And most times everyone choose to work on the MOST popular items (for example TOP100 products.. Sometimes you need to find another SMALL niche to start with!)

If done correctly you can still rank affiliate websites, if you follow the rules you can get free traffic to your website through SEO. It doesn't matter if you are promoting it's all about giving search engines what they want.

What do the search engines want?

Most sites on the internet are affiliate sites. If you have helpful content, Google will reward you. If you do a search for best products on sale (where products can be baby seats or shoes)..... you will notice an affiliate site. This site The Wirecutter is an affiliate site, I don't see any ads on it. But the site is ranking very well on Google for most products. The difference between the site and other affiliate sites, is the depth of the articles.

Normally we use traffic driven techniques to get hits on our site, Google doesn't give priority in terms on ranking to an affiliate site.
