My question is: what keyword is better to optimize #1 or #2 and why?

#1 Keyword "supadance shoes" has 210 searches/month
#2 Keyword "supadance ballroom dance shoes" has 90 searches/month

I think it is better to optimize #2. In this case I will get people who are searching faze "supadance ballroom dance shoes" and people who are searching for "supadance shoes"
Am I thinking thinking correctly here ???
#keywords #long #short #tail

Yeah, 2nd one is better because it has low competition. This keywords is easy to optimize. So you can work with your 2nd one.

I agree with that 100%. In this case I have a question: would i come up in Google search list if people search for "supadance shoes" ? In other words, if I want to compete with keyword "supadance shoes" is it better to use #1 keyword or #2?

Yes you're correct. Target the longer tail but targeted search (of course it has to have search volume as well) first.

After your rankings are doing well for them, then aim for your bigger search/higher competition phrases related to your business.

      Hi All,

I agree with your points! Focusing on long tail keywords is an effective way to increase organic traffic. I myself saw the results when I focused on long tail keywords.

The main advantage of long tail keyword is it prevents the wrong target audience from coming to our website.

      Thanks.

In this case my question is: if my page is optimized for "supadance ballroom dance shoes" - lets say page is very strongly optimized ; when people are searching for "supadance shoes" will I be listed in Google search? in my long tale phrase I do have both words "supadance" and "shoes"? To my understanding i should be listed, but I am not sure !

Sure, it all depends upon backlinking, but still nobody cannot say whether it ranks or not.

I have seen some popular sites that will rank what you have said.

Yes you will be listed for both. Basically though by going long tail your diluting your short tail keyword. If your highly relevant for both the long and short tail, you may find yourself at #1 for both one day.

By saying diluting your short tail keyword I think you are saying that I am making "Supadance Shoes" keyword weaker if i optimize long tail "supadance ballroom dance shoes" vs if i optimised "Supadance Shoes" is that correct?

In my case "Supadance Shoes" keyword is primer focus and i really do not want to weaken it.

OK... well I'll try and explain my thinking on this, but I do not have any secret insight to Google's algorithms, so this is just speculation, and the numbers are purely fictional.

Lets look at this:supadance ballroom dance shoes
There are 4 words in it so each word has 25% of the total weight of your keywords, therefore "superdance shoes" only has 50% weight... however you will still turn up in the results for the 2 word keyword.

Then you have your long keyword supadance ballroom dance shoes
You are of course at 100% weight for the long tail keyword.

Then you have other words like "ballroom dance", which are 50%, and dance shoes, and various other combinations (probably about 18? in total) all in all the long tail keyword will return in my possible guesstimate about 700% (purely fiction number) of the search engine results as the short tail keywords. But some will be irrelevant such as you "ballroom dance" "superdance ballroom" "super dance" "ballroom dance" etc visitors, who will probably bounce off your site so often Google will just not send them anymore. So you might see a decrease in visitors over time, but an increase in conversion percentage.

In my opinion, always focus on long tail.... so long as it is relevant, and maybe one day down the road with the longtail you might end up ranked for not just "supadance ballroom dance shoes", but also "supadance shoes"

If you want to rank for Keyword 1, optimize your website with keyword1.

Keyword 2 is very specific and if you target your website with keyword 2, I don't see any reason that you can't rank for keyword 1 and vice versa.

Choose keywords 1 if this is the keywords which you want to rank for ultimately.

    Doesn't make any sense.

If you can optimize for one keyword, surely (don't call me Shirley) you can optimize for two keywords & target both keywords at the same time.

Yes, I think so. Because when we choose keyword, we often choose long keyword with low competition.

I believe focusing on the long tail keyword would help you gain more search traffic in the short run and this could eventually help you rank well for the short tail keywords down the line.

    • I agree with going for the latter option. Long tail is better because it has low search volume but is very much targeted. And as many said, the competition is low. Make sure to use it in the title and a couple of times within the content.

I think you have to be used #1 because these searches are good, But when you create backlinks use #2 keywords as a variation keyword.

This whole conversation is getting stupid. If you use the long tail of that keyword and your site contains the short tail then it will also help you rank the short. It is not like you have to make a choice here. To me it sounds like folks are over optimizing their anchors if this is their main concern.

By the time you rank that long tail to top 5 then the short tail will probably come along and be something lower but good, like maybe the teens. Don't make the mistake of over targeting a keyword because you "want it" because that won't work. Back in 2009 it did, but shit has changed. Too many exact match anchors are extremely dangerous.

I wouldn't bother trying to rank for either. I would go for "buy supadance shoes". The others are too broad. When you have low search volume you need buyer phrases. I was making $600 a month from 45 searches a month according to the GKWT but only because I chose to rank the phrases where people had their credit cards out. So if it were me I would rank for the following:

    buy supadance shoes
    purchase supadance shoes
    where to buy supadance shoes
where can i buy supadance shoes
    supadance shoes 1618
    supadance shoes 1616

I'm sure there are many more. Don't worry if you see no search volume for any of the above using keyword tools. People DO search using those keyword phrases.

Also think local. Type "where to buy supashoes in"....into Google and you'll see city names appear. Rank for those and explain you can buy them locally OR online Create one page per city and you'll rank first page easily with no backlinks. I have had massive success doing this.

I think that you need to calculate it according to your target. If you choose 01 you have so hard to rank your site by competing with others on the other hand in 02 choice you have low competition for ranking. So choose according to your capacity.
        {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[10037085].message }}
  • It honestly doesn't matter, you can rank for both terms. If your trying to sell that single product than it obviously makes more sense to focus ON THAT term but at the same time, if you can rank for both terms. You just have 2 terms you can use as back links.
