If you post a link, linking to quality content, in a relevant forum or under a relevant blog post, why wouldn't it work?

If you are asking if it works as a backlink, you may want to change your way of thinking and just focus on quality content and sharing it with a relevant audience, and the rest will take care of itself.

Use relevant forums to build backlinks else your site would get penalized by spam team. Forum signatures works great for me and working now also.

Forums are nofollow but are also a wonderful opportunity to network with other marketers and to get them to help you out with anything you may need. Social media can be a powerful tool too but you will have to work on building a following with anything you do online. The best way to get backlinks is by making articles and videos with YouTube

Yes, forum posting and blog commenting works only when you are sharing your knowledge with users instead of sharing about your services or products. If you are participating in forum discussion with the intention f promoting your services then it will not work for you. Try to answer as a expert in your field, so that people consider you to hire you for your services. The only think which works in forum discussion and blog commenting is the website link which you added into your profile.

whatever you do it is very important to make the right balance between your keywords like you should not use your main keywords more than 5% and you will be good to go and read seo forums about this ....

What a depressing thread. You got this many comments, and practically all of them giving you wrong advice and false information.

As a general rule of thumb forum links and blog comments DO NOT WORK as SEO. They're nofollow, and Google will not pass any link juice. Of course you do not need to avoid nofollow links - everyone has them. They will show in your link profile, but will not do much good for you.

Post good content, and someone might click your sig link. The overwhelming majority will not.

Borderline spamming and poor quality sites don't really work. There's nothing new about that. Well, they might do something if you don't have any real competition, but that's not the case with any site I'm working on...

Industry sites. Partners. Link baiting: cool content, tight writing, infographics, or just doing something noteworthy. PBNs. Finding a quality SEO partner who can provide links.

Of course this is still working! The trick, however, is not to spam!

If you choose to do some blog commenting, always read the articles first and offer something insightful when you comment. Leaving spammy comments like "great article!" or anything that is obviously not related to the topic will just get you sent to spam.

And with forums, it's tricky. You'd need to be an active member to make yourself noticed and to make people trust you enough to care about your website in your signature. Just by posting random silly forum posts, you won't get anywhere. Or worse, you'll get your account suspended because it would be obvious you don't want to contribute to the community, you're just there to promote yourself.

Most forums and blogs will nofollow your link in signature / comment. So you cannot these for link building in large way.
Another factor to consider is anchor text diversity to avoid Penguin penalty

Nofollow links is great for create some mixture of links with dofollow + nofollow...

If you create only dofollow that not looks natural, and yes, anchor text diversity is important factor also

Yes, they are still working. You can contribute valuable answers to the questions in the forums sites related to your business. But, don't put excessive links as it can consider you as a spammer. You can put relevant links in the answers, but not always. In the beginning, contribute relevant answers without any link as much as you can.

Blog commenting can also be useful. Try to comment on the do follow websites related to your websites.

It most certainly still works. People are looking for different types of sites to look at as well as purchase things that they may have otherwise not purchased if they never found the site. I think this is why link building is so successful. Also linking blogs together will allow for people to go from one blog to the other.

If you know a friend who has a successful blog see if he or she could embed your link into their page somewhere for people to see.
