How best to update a site with better look and mobile-friendly design

I need to update a few sites so they look better than rather rudimentary non-expert html coding. Also need to make them mobile-friendly. I have done very little CSS, so, probably need to hire it done if it's not expensive. Are there any hazards to a redesign? I do not want the SERP to downgrade because some of them rank well.

I didn't realize that I did. I guess I was thinking somebody else started the other thread. This new thread had two questions, first being how best to update a site with a better look/design and secondly, make it mobile-friendly.

Everybody always assumes I use Wordpress. I really don't care for it. Regardless, the sites in question do not use it. I need to update sites I have handcoded and make them look better and be mobile-friendly. In fact, I may not do it, I might hire it done but if somebody has suggestions on doing it, I have basic web design skills. I'm just not very good. But I make money. I am a one-man show and do everything and don't have time to learn how to be a great designer and programmer.

Hi there. I would recommend you take a look at themeforest. There are some amazing multi-paged HTML5 responsive templates for sale from around $15. You really don't need that much expertise to take your existing content and pour it into a new responsive template. You can also use your own CSS to tweak anything and utilize your design skills in creating headers etc. This way you can avoid serious hair pulling and insomnia.
Need help give me a pm but i don't work for FREE sorry

I note that they have a field when describing the templates as either yes/no for high resolution.

          Page:
Responsive Html Template Templates & Themes | ThemeForest

What does this mean and why does it matter?

[Also need to make them mobile-friendly.... Are there any hazards to a redesign? I do not want the SERP to downgrade because some of them rank well.]

Well, if you do not redesign your site to be mobile friendly, you'll get smacked harder by Google than a child does for screaming and yelling in the mall. Please make it mobile-friendly or you risk total annihilation... okay I exaggerate but you get my point.

If you want to do it simply, just use wordpress and change to a mobile-friendly, responsive theme. Otherwise, you could look for help by web design firms etc.
