Solid Backlink Strategy

My site's been up and running for a bit (coming up on a year) and I haven't really focused on any backlinking. I also haven't been writing enough! Too busy with my full-time job I guess (which isn't the website unfortunately).

Anyway, people talk about creating backlinks around here like everyone already knows how to do it. I see a lot of answers to SEO questions like, "Oh, just start creating backlinks."

I've done enough reading to know Google doesn't like some backlinks and they like others. I know some SEO firms do a ton of writing then distribute the work to document sharing sites. I don't know if these are part of a sound strategy or not. Should I ask people to exchange links with me? What's the best method . . . and one that's on the complete "up-and-up?" I'd rather it take a long time and do it right than try to boost my rankings (or lack thereof) artificially.

A lot, quite honestly depends on your niche. I can gain good mentions for my wine site because people seem to enjoy free wine.

I wouldn't focus on what the best type of link happens to be, instead I'd focus on action that you can track.

Are you tracking internal links and their affects on SEO? What about blogroll exchanges? Try a bit of anything that you can come across, even some 1 off guest posting and see what happens to work.

While some may be more effective than others today, I would virtually guarantee that some action would be better than none at all-

Read our most recent articles on wine, this month it's that unappreciated region called Napa Valley.

No, I'm not very organized about it. I write posts. I make YouTube videos. My analytics skills suck. I use Google webmaster tools to check search terms and such but no, I don't track internal links and their effects on SEO. I wouldn't even know how.

I guess I'm slightly paralyzed by the fact that Google inflicts penalties for bad strategy. For example, I've heard that forum links can be bad for you. True? I see people using them all the time. For example, you use a link in your signature. Good? Bad?

Hi Boringman, for the types of questions you have and with your current situation, I would suggest you find a mentor, someone who's been in the trenches and has run solid link building campaigns that can advise you properly. Seek out their lineage as well to see who they've learnt from.

You're better off learning from one person than getting tons of information from forums and then be paralyzed with too much info.

Forum links are good if they are from a good site, They can also be bad if they are from a bad site. Not all links are created equal. You need to decide what metrics are important about that link before you gain it, such as age of site, link to that site, cache date, etc and more.

I know you don't but its a must for every webmaster, get someone to train you up on why you might need to view webmasters tools and the options behind it, what you need to do with the options should something prompt. Time is money, pay someone to teach you fast.

The best kind of backlink is one from a highly relevant site with high authority in that particular niche. Period.

Aim to create ORIGINAL content ONLY and distribute it (e.g. Social Media) and with a link back (even though most are nofollow, these create social media signals to your site, improving your SEO as well).

Over time, build your brand name, then reach out to authority players and get them to link to you.

There are many ways to build backlinks, but it's up to you to choose the ones you think are best in your case.
For instance, blog commenting and forum posting (with your link in your signature) are probably the most popular methods to build backlinks. And get traffic.
Social media is a great help as well, sharing your content on Facebok, Twitter, Google+ ecc., ecc., can bring in a lot of traffic. You build backlinks with this as well, they're nofollow though, but they still count in terms of traffic.

I have heard (many times) that blog comments / forum signature links are poor quality links and should be avoided. Why so much conflicting information on this?

Boringman, SEO is no longer a game of numbers but quality.
I can see you mentioning blog commenting, doc sharing
e.t.c as backlink strategy. Don't get me wrong, contextual links
is always good any day, anytime but it has to come from an authority
    or trusted source.

That's why you see people resort to PBN, Guest posting, outreach
    e.t.c.

However, even the strategies mentioned above have become mere names
as most providers go about it the wrong way. Newbies simply don't
know what works or who to believe anymore. And to make matters
worst the more they read the less they understand.

Google has made SEO very complex and not everyone that claims
to know it all can offer you any good result.

I'm going to break it down for you here and clear some air.

    *Avoid spamming links

*Use only original content and don't spin.

*Get quality links, the likes of web 2.0, doc sharing, social bookmark,
will only get you a PR0 links or N/A which is of no use to your ranking.
To get any result from these kind of methods you need to build 2nd tier links,
3rd and even 4th but that can go out of control.
Again, why build other people's site or site you have no control over.
If any of the links eventually get deleted there goes your link pyramid
    structure.

    * Get links from low OBL and avoid blog comment, they have been
abused to death except if you can find a moderated one with low OBL of 20.

*Guest blogging is good but it has to come from a reputable source.
Most of what is being offered has been spammed to death and the
    good ones are extremely picky.

*PBN is effective but mustn't be abused. If you can build yours that
    would be better.

There is just a lot more. Think about it, if you can't make it in the SEO
work you might just want to quit afterall there are various other ways
    to get traffic.
