Meta descriptions are really important. In fact, I would say that they are your last hope on SERPs to get more visitors on your website. I see a number of companies lacking in one thing, which is an effective meta description. I agree you shoudln't charge anybody for SEO services if you don't know meta descriptions are NOT a ranking factor. It should contain your main keywords though, as they will show up bold in SERPS for any query that contains them.

Meta Title

To put it simply, the most important aspect of meta title tag is to make it reflect the keyword while being natural. The Meta title tag should include your keyword. A correlation research has established that websites that placed their keywords towards the beginning of the title tag perform better that their competitors. Adding the keyword to the beginning of the title tag is recommended. Say if you have a furniture website and your keyword is ‘discount furniture’ then having a Meta title like – ‘Discount Furniture Varieties By XYZ.com‘ would be considered apt.


Meta Description

Always make sure your Meta description tag is natural and is a readable description of the webpage and not some keyword-stuffed sentence.

“kitchen cabinet, kitchen cabinets, cheap kitchen cabinets, stylish kitchen cabinets” – is improper

“Looking for kitchen cabinets? We have a huge collection of kitchen cabinets. Whether you are looking for cheap kitchen cabinets or stylish ones; we have everything for you” – this would be proper.

Please note - Meta description is not used as ranking signal by Google and many other major search engines. Think of it as a pitch for search engine listings. Make it attractive enough so as to attract clicks.

Meta description for website pages is very important. You can make proper advantage of meta description by other targeted keywords in it. Title length is very small, you cannot add all the keywords into it. That time, you can take advantage of meta description by smartly placing those keywords. Do not add the same keywords you added in title, try to add other search queries in meta description.

Meta description tags suck.

Traffic isn't static, everyone doesn't search the same keywords so a SERP description shouldn't be static.

Delete the meta description tag from the HTML & optimize the webpage content for multiple SERP descriptions based on search queries (plural).
