Article Marketing and Backlinking

I have a couple quick questions for you all:

1) I have heard some strategies to give your articles some extra umph traffic wise. Is the goal to just get it ranking better on google or are the intentions to get other sources to see your article in other places?

2) If that is the case above, couldn't you just keep your content on your own website then use those methods to get your own article page to show up in the search engine?

I think I have an understanding that ezines and squidoo and the such have PR already that people use it for that reason. I heard in a post that writing an article a day and "working it" could get me some pretty good results. I am just afraid that if any of those sites decided to block affiliate linking and the such then im going to be back at square one.

Any tips on this? I hear so many things from all over. I know there is no right way, it just seems like some of the strategies can hurt you in the end if something goes wrong. But that is probably the case for every strategy haha.

I have been wanting to try the write an article a day and work it strategy but this has been stopping me. Also when people do that are they direct linking? And are using ezines?

Thanks for the input guys!

~David

Well, writing articles and posting them is a good strategy. People will find your articles on the article sites more than on your site. One of the reasons you write the articles is for people to find your site. So yes, write and post.

If the article directory does not allow affiliate links, just work around this by linking to one of your domains. Each article directory has different rules, and I can't remember them all. Most allow just about anything in the resource box. Some like Ezinearticles (I think) won't let you link to a domain that is not yours. So register a domain for the purpose of your articles and create subdomains for each article or even just directories.

By posting articles and promoting both the articles and your site you will get more umph from a bigger web than if you post the articles on your site and promote that. People will republish your articles if they are any good. There are a lot of reasons for doing it this way.

I would rather have the content on my own site and have it show up on the first page of google rather than an EZA article I wrote show up. Why have people go to EZA and then hope they click on your link in your resource box when they could go directly to your site.

The page rank on the home page of EZA, squidoo etc may be higher than your own domain, but a brand new article or lens doesn't have any page rank and that's where your link will be from.

When you write an article, don't just use it on EZA. Put the content on your own site first. Wait a day or so, then put it on EZA. Set up a lens with it. Put it on a couple of your own blogger blogs. Submit it to other article directories as well.

Dee's a smart lady. I do pretty much the same thing, generally speaking. Although, I don't write much original content. I put stuff on my own site first, then use other Web 2.0 and UGC sites to link back to properties I own (or at least exercise a large degree of control over, like Blogger blogs.)

You ever hear that saying "All Roads Lead to Rome"?

Be Rome. Go to other "cities" and build roads back to your own stuff.

Time is limited so I'll just reply to Q#2.

You are right, make sure that you use the method for your articles with your own sites.

@Dee - I read your post about your linking strategy and I think I will give that a shot. Seems like a pretty good strategy

@AzOnlineMarketing - What is a TLD? Still somewhat new

Also does anyone have a good recommendation for a good monthly hosting site? I can only afford to pay month by month right now. Thinking of creating a few niche blogs.

One other things to remember, when you post your articles to the directories, you are also building your name or brand, least you should be. Often building on your name or brand can do much more for your business in the long run. Think what will happen when joe average says, I've seen your name everywhere.

On the same hand, if your writing quality articles, you can be seen as an expert, the person to go to. Just as important your building trust.

As for article bio linking, it's always a good idea to send or have links go to your own sites, not an affiliates site. Why send them away, before you get an opt-in, a rss subscriber or a book marker? Before you lose them for good.

    Just my thoughts

If you are trying to sell a product..is it best to direct someone to your domain with your article on the product or better to use a domain redirect if it is allowed and have them sold directly from there.

Just saw your comment Ron about sending person to your own site. However, what if you feel the sales page for the item is really great and maybe your own site is not as strong....? Is a direct linking through a domain redirect still a mistake?

Most of what is written here covers it all. But I have this one comment about worrying about affiliate linking.

You should be using redirects. If you're not, you are losing sales.

and, you should get your own domain name for the main affiliate products you are going to promote, and re-direct that name to your affiliate link.

    Have a great day.

    Hi David,

I have been thinking a lot about this also and one thing that I read is that referral traffic is one of the best types of traffic. So if you write an article and you refer people to read a review of whatever product you are promoting you have already gained some sort of authority in these people heads.

Informative article--->Product Review---->Sales Page (you are creating a sales funnel)

Whereas if people find your site via a search engine they may be slightly distrustful and want to click off your site to see if this product that you are trying to sell is worthwhile and not a ripoff.

My personal decision is to do 3 rewrites of an article: 1 for my site, 1 for goarticles and possibly one for EZA and to backlink my site and goarticles.

    I hope this is clear.

Build a keyword list first. A good list... meaning, full of keywords related to your niche that are not so competitive you'll have almost no chance at getting them ranked well. The other piece of the basic keyword puzzle is to choose keywords that get at least a decent number of monthly searches. It's a subjective call, but I don't usually target any keyword lower than about 500 monthly searches.

That's critical, or all your article writing and marketing gains will be temporary and fleeting. For true passive article power, you must target such keywords. YOU MUST, PERIOD.

That's if your goal is to push a growing flow of highly targeted visitors to your site(s) through the links at the end of your articles. If you're just looking to make a name for yourself (brand yourself), it's about the quality of your information and it's a numbers game. People like Sean Mize submit ungodly numbers of articles and that gives him "authority" status in and of itself in many peoples' eyes.

There are a lot of ways to skin the article marketing cat.
