Google to rank 'mobile-friendly' sites higher

Money to be made Boy's and Girls...

More than half of Australia's biggest companies will "disappear" from Google on mobile devices as the US technology giant changes the way it ranks searches.

From Wednesday, Google will prioritise companies that have "mobile-friendly" websites when people use the search engine on their smartphones or tablet computers.

Google says businesses with desktop-only sites will still appear in searches but they will be ranked lower then those tailored for mobile use.

No, google will not just up and rank mobile friendly sites higher.

You are not reading or listening to 90% of what is really going on.

I won't even go into the mathematical reasoning of there being only
10 sites listed on the first page....

    Two myths about mobile:

    1) If you have a mobile friendly site, not only will you rank higher,
but you will be on the first page.

    2) If you don't have a mobile friendly site, you will not rank.

Based on my research it seems that Google will rank mobile friendly websites higher, but only when a user is on a mobile device (like a tablet or phone).

If someone only ever used a desktop computer, then they will notice no change to the results in their google search. However if someone used mobile devices, they will notice a big change in what is shown in their google search results, as google penalize websites that are not mobile friendly.

For a big website, it's recommended to have a mobile version, but the ranking will depend if ONLY people are using a smartphone! Otherwise, the ranking system is still the same if we use the PC to search!

Another piece of FUD. The stats are somewhat interesting, but I suspect that some of them were just pulled out of a hat. This isn't such a huge issue than the first sentence makes it out to be.

Based on my clicking just one link it seems that this is exactly what Google's blog post says.

Holy shit you are spreading lies. Google is not going to just remove listings. All they said is that they are going to factor in whether or not a site is mobile friendly into the mobile search results. It is 1 of over 200 ranking factors they use.

Oh look, google forcing the web to the way they want it. I've never seen this before I'm shocked!

Atleast they're keeping web designers busy and in business.

Nobody is forcing you to do anything. Don't do it if you don't want to.

Do you not realize that every other ad agency rep has been going about the rise of mobile for at least a couple of years? This is nothing new, mobile today is just business as usual. Google is not exactly a forerunner here, but doing this change rather late when the masses are already there. And they've been going to this direction for couple of years.

Your ignorance about the biggest trends isn't Google's fault.

On the way home in the car the ABC radio and had a Google spokes person and she mentioned that they have been working with the big companies for the last 2 months and that they must have "mobile-friendly" websites, or they will be dropped from the search engine which includes searching on laptops/computers...!

There's a key phrase there I don't believe, and it's "must have". Can you provide a recording to that? Even if they went and said that, it doesn't match Google's messages at all. Perhaps the radio host derailed the narrative, or perhaps they said something silly for some reason.

Or the most likely scenario: perhaps it's you who's reporting it all wrong. There's a huge difference between "should have or may decrease in visibility" and "must have or will be dropped".

Or in other words, there's a smell of FUD around your comment.

Google ranks the mobile friendly site higher in the mobile searches with the "Mobile-friendly" specification. This affects the business for those who get most of the visitors from smartphones. But it is always good to have our site responsive, since mobile users are outranking PC users.

If you had read article in the link it has to do with Australia not Finland or anywhere else, and no i can not give you a link to the radio show as I was driving in shitty weather at the time

But the question was asked "Is Google going to drop big business websites if they are not mobile-friendly?

Answer from Google rep " we have been working with web masters for the last 3 months so if they are not ready that have been told as of the 22nd of April this will be going ahead"
        So Fud that

That answer does not say that they will be dropped from the search results. It says they are going ahead with the planned release of the mobile algorithm update. You are spreading misinformation. It is going to be 1 of over 200 ranking signals they use. That's it. They are not going to be dropped from the search results.

I see you're not much into this "reading the thread" thing, but I actually went and read the article as I clearly said above. And I saw that it was a clickbait with some redeeming qualities.

This change, BTW, will affect the whole world.

So you flat out admitted to reporting it completely wrong to us on this forum. I guess it's case closed then. However, I still don't get why you'd put such a fear-mongering spin on it.

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and say it. You are lying.

They have actually specifically said that this update only impacts searches on smartphones.

EDIT: I was wrong. You weren't lying. You just took what they said and made a giant leap to a wrong conclusion with it.

ROTFLAMO! Can you imagine a mass deindex???????????
What planet do you people live on? Come settle on Earth.

Complete BS. What has "google" actually said? That if you want the home depot,
not matter. You will get the home depot. No joe shmo hardware and widget
store will cut it, just because they have a more mobile-friendly site.

Can you imagine the listings people would have to sift through? Can you imagine
google making people sift through BS? Of course not.

I guess it's time to stop reading some parts of this forum for a while.

The BS on mobile is just going to get out of control from guys who heard
a guy who knew a guy....

I'll bet 100 threads get started on this crap.

This new algo will actually hurt the little guy who was borderline.
Not in any way, shape, or form hit any big, authoritative companies.

You people continue to want to put google into a box on one
      item.

What happened to all the site speed gurus who claimed that was the end all
      to end all?

Anyone who is truly going gaga over this, is seriously misinformed, and has
not been into real SEO to begin with.

I can't believe that you people just discovered mobile....

This part I believe. It will likely be a way for them to push more traffic to Google owned and Google favored properties as has been the trend with many algo updates.

Google to rank 'mobile-friendly' sites higher
Higher than what, the other sites/pages that are already in mobile SERPs?

Sure it's a great chance to generate business, but mobile pages have been available for years.

I will say the Google mobile tool is most likely a cash cow for web/devs. Find non-mobile sites/pages & send the domain owner a link/screenshot to the Google Mobile tool page where their site fails the mobile test.

Let Google do all the mobile selling for you, use their authority to your own advantage.

Guys, I think within next 15 days it will be quiet visible in the SERP's the consequences of Mobilegeddon. Moreover, from my personal perspective Google should prefer the device used by the users on a particular website like if the desktop users are more than Google should not impact the website rakings if the website is not mobile friendly.

Rather than punishing "non-mobile friendly" sites in general, surely it would make more sense for Google to tailor the search results depending on the device used when making the search. So if some one searches using their phone, then show sites that are mobile friendly higher in the results.

Mobile factor will count or say overpower if all other factors will remain same. What if a site has no mobile version but has significant higher rankings in desktop results compared to a simple new site that have a mobile version but provides no more valuable contents; will the later win in mobile SERP?

These parts from the Google Blog are probably the most relevant:

    This update:
    * Affects only search rankings on mobile devices
    * Affects search results in all languages globally
    * Applies to individual pages, not entire websites

While the mobile-friendly change is important, we still use a variety of signals to rank search results. The intent of the search query is still a very strong signal -- so even if a page with high quality content is not mobile-friendly, it could still rank high if it has great content for the query.
