Mobile Search Google Update: Desktop Searches Do Seem Affected

Google claimed this new update for mobile searches wouldn't have an effect on desktop searches.

However I'm seeing an awful lot of activity in SerpFox right now and as far as I know they track the rankings from a desktop search based view.

Possibly they blended this update with a Penguin or Panda update?

Funny enough, most of the sites I track are not optimized for mobile search, while at the same time most websites show increased rankings.

Things have been unusually quiet after this supposedly major update. I dont see much changes going on. If this was a "mobilegeddon", it's looking more like a snorefest right now.

I've got a couple of "guinea pig" websites that have no mobile either for reasons unknown to me, or because devs had to prioritize other stuff.

So far nothing conclusive. Or rather, nothing at all. There's a couple of keywords that completely dropped from radar on mobile search, but that could be just a fluke. However, it's more common that the mobile placement is slightly higher than the desktop one. Mostly it's just more or less the same.

Added: Desktop results also the same within normal variation.

Keep in mind that this is a very limited data set, and I'm from the other side of the world.

I do track about 200 sites in SerpFox and saw many green numbers on the 22nd/23rd, I also saw a few sites with very large drops in rankings, eg 100 positions down. Odd enough the two sites that went down hard are part of a clients portfolio, while his 6 other sites remained stable or went up. The odd part of that is that those sites received the exact same link building and are setup in the exact same way as the good performing ones, using the same themes as well so it has little to do with mobile responsive or not.

I don't hear much chit chat about this update either so quite surprised that I see so many fluctuations, hence my initial thoughts that it's blended with another update.

Regarding on the mobile-friendly update, I checked lately on the search results of mobile and desktop then I find out that the results is still the same but the effect concerning the update is still no changes (for me according to my location and searches) because the websites that are not mobile-friendly is still on top of sites that are labelled mobile friendly by Google.

I think what happened was, the people at the GooglePlex were about to press the "Update" button, but got scared when someone rushed in and told them that close to 50% of the leading internet websites online are not yet mobile friendly.

I mean, how could you penalize Warren Buffet's website?

So, they probably held it off (but didn't tell anyone), or toned it down to near zero.

      So much for "Mobilegeddon"....

Cool story bro, but I'm clutching to my Ockham's razor. Your explanation on why it seems to be a non-event so far is essentially a conspiracy theory.

Google has been working with the big players on this change. Also, high profile websites have all sorts of mobile implementations. Responsive design isn't the only game in town, nor the only thing that Google approves as mobile. Not having a mobile site in 2015 is just a bad idea. This has been all over the industry rags for several years at this point, and talking about the rise of mobile seems to be a bit passé even in the backwoods of Europe where I live.
