Confused about Google Structured Data

I am trying to understand Google Structured Data.
I have a small site that Webmaster tools marked with
17 errors to catagories, pages and posts, for example.

I thought a theme would have the proper markup for
the search engines.

I have been searching on the internet to learn more,
but still confused.

Does one have to use this? Does your site get flagged
or you lose rankings if you don't use Google markup?

When one uses their markup helper one can put together
what they would want, but what then? Am I to replace
all the body html in Wordpress with what is generated?

Would I then have to rebuild each page in the markup
helper as I change or add to the post?

And I realize that there are probably plugins to use,
but first I have to wrap my head around this.

This page told what to do step by step but did not
answer many of my questions
How to use Google

Thanks.
Jeannie

Schema code is optional (for now) & has 100s of different ways for optimizing content. Without you be very specific on what exactly you're trying to optimize it's going to be difficult to make any detailed suggestions.

If someone is building a new site/theme I would recommend using Schema markup because it does have some advantages. Example SERP Schema box which allows lower ranked pages to jump to the top of the SERPs for their target keyword without having stronger backlinks than the top ranked organic pages.

Bottom line is, traditional SEO still works & ranks pages without Schema tags.

Thanks for your answer. This was interesting:
"Example SERP Schema box which allows lower ranked pages to jump to the top of the SERPs for their target keyword without having stronger backlinks than the top ranked organic pages".

It is basicly the whole site. It looks like Google is suggesting pages, posts and catagories be handled this way

Am I to replace all the text in the Wordpress post with what is generated when you get the html from the markup generator?

And it seems that plugins for SEO such as Wordpress Seo by Yost would be redundent. It would be repeating some of the same thing.
