How to become great at SEO?

Since nobody is taking the time to read a 1000 word post, I had to shorten it in:

How do I become great at SEO?

What I did so far:
  • Signed up for all important blogs and read them daily
  • Did some online courses (udemy, treehouse, lynda) about SEO
  • In my regular day job I am also in touch with conversion optimization and SEO
  • Check Analytics like it's an obsession because it's amazing, all that data

Should I focus on copywriting since it's so closely related to SEO? (copywriting can be done with keywords in mind right?)

I can check Analytics all day, put a keyword in H1, another one in H2, but I am pretty sure there are more effective ways to really learn SEO in depth.

Consider me interested on the same topic. As far as I've been around Digital Marketing I know that there are many things that work for some people and some that don't, needless to say, some of the adjust to own's scope of life and other doesn't.

Better advice I can give you not being a kind of SEO public authority is that Try & Fail looks the most nurturing learning experience around all this. Literature and reading is useful too, you won't ever figure out things until you find them somewhere.

Digital marketing: marketing that makes use of digital devices (computers, video players, mobile phones, game consoles, radio).

Internet marketing is marketing that uses internet. So, there's a lot of overlap, you could do digital marketing on the internet. But you could run entire digital marketing campaigns without using the internet (as in you send people video recordings in physical format).

If you do digital marketing online, SEO can come in handy though there are many ways of doing it that do not require SEO.

You could create digital videos and rank them. You can create digital videos and call various websites and convince them to upload your videos so their visitors can see.

Make friends with business owners in your community and get them to link to your site.

Give them money or good content, if needed.

Not any business owners, owners of related businesses: if you're a landscaper, get links from a store that sells landscaping, home repair, home appliances.

If you sell home insurance, get links from builders, real estate agents.

Create a 2nd site and exchange links: you link to my site #1, I link to you from my site #2. Make site #2 a good site.

Look up 'broken link Bible' if you don't like the above.

Create a page for every keyword you think people use to find your business.

Make sure you have a great google business page.

Create videos for your business, give useful info, use your keywords in the title and description, post on youtube and such sites. (Create videos that sell, create videos out of your pages / posts.)

Make sure you understand onpage optimization.

    Send press releases...

Create reasons to have press releases. Don't do press releases about your redoing the contact us page on your site.

But, mostly, get other businesses in your area (or if outside your area, related niches) to link to your site.

There is not much to lose, except for the 350$ a year on Shopify.

However, I am the type of person that doesn't care much for average so I want to become great and help this man turning a great company. Since SEO is so fundamental in Online marketing and I know the most about that, that's where we probably should lay the focus.

There is a big subforum on Warriorforum about Mindset, so I guess you all heard about the 10k rule? 10k hours to become great at something.

Reading is not taking action. What I understand so far from SEO, is thats it's probably a lot about writing with SEO in mind. Is that true?

So, what are the most important steps I can focus on now to grow a strong foundation in SEO so I make myself, but also the business of my father in low (and the company I work for) successful?

There is so much, hard to seperate important from nice-to-know.

I hope I can get some helpful advice here!

Could be. There are other ways of doing SEO and you can do only some of them and get what you want.

If you don't do this, you'd be doing other similar things.

To boost Page Rank you must have high quality Backlinks and the best way to generate quality backlinks is to submit your site on different web directories and article directories.

Some Good Web And Article Directories Are:

      DMOZ
      Yahoo Directory
      Best Of The Web
      Ezine Articles
      Article Base
      Go Articles

      3. Guest Posting:
This is one of the most used and best technique to increase Page Rank. Most Blogs have options of guest posting through which you can post at their blog and get two or three backlinks in return to your blog this really helps if you are posting on good Page Rank Blog with the same Niche as yours.

      4. Link Exchange:
This is one of the most old techniques but it still works, in order to get a good PageRank you should get higher Page Rank sites to link to your site, through this you will firstly get a good Page Rank and will get traffic from that site.

      5. Keep Updating:
Google really likes Sites that keep their content fresh and unique. The more you post, the more Google will crawl your site and the more chances for you to increase page rank

      6. Commenting On Other Blogs:
Commenting is a very crucial process in generating a good Page Rank. In Blogging Community you must be very socially active. Some Blogs are Do-Follow, which can help you generate back links to your site by just commenting on their posts. Nowadays most blogs have CommentLuv Plugin installed on their site which automatically places a link to their last blog post at the end of their comment.

      7. Social Bookmarking:
Social Bookmarking is a very effective method to increase Page Rank because by sharing your Site on different Social Sites you will get a free Backlink and Traffic. Some of the most popular Social Bookmarking Sites Are:

      Facebook
      Google Plus
      Squidoo
      Digg
      Hub Pages
      Stumble Upon

      8. Website Accessibility:
If Your Website is down for a long period of time, Google may reduce the ranking of your site. So You should always keep Your Website accessible.

      9. Using Commonly Searched Keywords:
As You know people search using keywords and not the whole sentence so if you have used a keyword which is very frequently searched then you get a higher chance of your website being visited and MORE VISITORS = BETTER PAGE RANK.

      10. Website Advertising:
You can make an Ad or a banner for your site and advertise it on different website, through this you will get good back links and traffic.

      11. Create Multiple Pages:
If You create multiple Pages on Your Site this will strengthen your internal linking and will ultimately increase Page Rank.

      12. Participate In Forums:
Google loves forums that are most frequently updated and by getting a back link from these forums you will succeed on increasing Page Rank.

      13. Using Signatures:
You can add a link to your website in your online signatures. For example, you can add signatures in your email and forum posts but don't try to spam because you can be blocked.

      14. When Does Google Re-Evaluate Page Rank?
Google Re-Evaluates Page Rank about Three to Four times per year, so almost every Three months Google calculates Your Page Rank again.

      15. Never Use Illegal Tactics:
Using illegal tactics can get you banned from Google and Google is very smart so never think that you can deceive Google because if they find out that you are using illegal techniques which are against their policy they will block you. Stay away from those tactics using these legitimate techniques will improve traffic.
All of these tactics are not useful now-a-days. Infact, I don't agree with you in many. Link exchange programs are now totally considered as spam. Facebook and Google plus are not social bookmarking sites they are Social Media Sites. Blog commenting not to mention they are mostly nofollow and if you are lucky enough to find one blog which is dofollow they don't provide any link juice. And I can see that you have mentioned many times the Google PR but don't you follow the news? Google's PR are now history, they are not going to update it in the future.

Find a few "easy" competition keywords. Build your own criteria to figure out what your version of "easy" is.

Then get the spammiest links you can. Buy them, build them, rent them, whatever.

Test 5-10 sites to learn what you can and can't get away with.

What still works, and what people are blowing smoke up your arse with.

Spend part of your 10k hours spamming Google, paying attention to what other marketers are doing in spammy niches, and analyze their link building tactics.

Then work your way back to less spammy arenas.

For your father's business, you need real marketing, and good onpage optimization. Get creative so people want to talk about you.

Affiliates will link to you if there's a way for you to work it in your model. You control the flow of juice.

Whitehat is a different monster but if you want to be a great SEO, start learning how to spam.

  • SEO is not an easy business. It cant be acquire in a short period of time, yes you'll learn everything about it but that doesn't mean you'll be good at it. It requires skills, patience and great motivation! You have to be a one tough cookie to be good or even great on it. Just a reminder, focus on doing an all white hat seo. Spamming won't give you long term stability. Google will find out and it will penalized your site. It will cost you more than the $350 a year you spend on shopify

    Best of luck pal!

I told you. Start spamming. (I'm legitimately telling you to junk up Google's web sewer.)

Test what actually works. Not what people tell you works.

        Don't spam your dads business.

Spam a bunch of test sites to see what it actually takes to rank.

        • There are many ways you can be good at SEO. Following are some of them:
          1) Start a Facebook group that drives traffic to your site.
          2) Start a blog on your website.
          2) Write great quality content and share it through Social media.
          3) Share your contents on StumbleUpon.
          4) Be an active member on forums and blogs. Respond to posts.
          5) Answer relevant questions posted on Yahoo and Quora.
          6) Send attractive monthly emails to a database.
          7) Work on on-page and off-page both.
          8) Focus on indexing.
          9) Stop spamming.

You're asking two different questions, so you're going to get two different answers.

To learn SEO, you need to start spamming. Start building links to sites and see what happens. I told you how in post #21.

Want a start? Get GSA SER, FCS Networker, and start buying PBN links to a 10-page site you've setup targeting 1 group of 5 very closely related keywords. Ready.... Go!

Don't ask questions. Just get those 2 tools, setup a site, buy some links and start spamming. Figure it out for yourself if you want to be "great".

To help your dad build his business (nobody read your post though, right?) you need to learn real marketing. DABK told you how in post #3.

Most didn't. You did. Sorry to put you in the same category as the rest. To be fair, i want to learn real marketing and i am trying to see the red line in everything related: seo, cro, copywriting.. i want to work hard and smart and specialise in an area. Dablers never get succesful.

            No.

You learn onpage SEO on places like moz.com.

You learn copy from studying copywriters, like Dan Kennedy or Sugarman or Gary Halbert.

I have a hard time putting the information in actionable steps. So I read that a metadescription needs to be below 156 keywords, I change that for the whole site.. and then, I take a next step because I read that a page need H1 and H2. Both steps take maybe 30 minutes.

These are all little SEO improvements and they are obviously important, however, with this tempo I might be OKAY in 5 years from now.

Is there no way to speed up the proces and TAKE MORE ACTION?

That's why I also wonder: Maybe I should learn copywriting because SEO and Copy seems to interrelated to eachother??

Your first step is to concentrate on your clients. Also, that implies concentrating on ease of use. Fabricate a site that is instinctive and simple for individuals to process. Adhering to best SEO practices like utilizing breadcrumb navigational components, making simple to-skim substance, having a straightforward interface, selecting the privilege magic words, and sorting out your substance into theme storehouses can go far in helping clients comprehend your site better.

Get consistent and focus on a few approaches. I see people posting 101 ways to build links etc, and that's fine. However, it can be a massive information overload for some people. There's no way you can build a routine, at least I think it would be difficult, that would incorporate ALL of those methods. Pick five or something you feel good about and comfortable doing and work from there.

Now what you need to do is build a website and try to bring in some traffic to it by your own. Doing it by your own what is most important. Note down your journey , review it and see what worked and what didn't

No doubt you have done a lot for learning full SEO. But I think you need to learn on page properly. If you good at on page then start off page. And also you have seen lot's of video tutorial. That's good for learning though. But practice is the best master so you should do practice.

Onpage will only get you so far, but it is a good place to start.

I do not recommend books very often, but SEO Secrets by Danny Dover covers the topic pretty well. It is a few years old now, but most of the content is still up to date.

Thank you. I actually have that book but then I read on this forum to stay away from books for SEO.

I take the advice since I don't really want to reinvent the wheel. You guys know whats up. I dont. Yet.

Do you know, most shared content on Internet have 3,000-10,000 words according to Buzzsumo.

SerpIQ analyzed over 20,000 top search engine results, and discovered that web pages that ranked in the top 10 have at least 2,000 words of content.

      I call BS.

Look at sites like dafont.com, one of the highest traffic sites on the net that ranks plenty of pages without caring about articles. How many words is Pinterest per each web page (maybe a dozen words).

Do you read articles about pizza before ordering from Papa John's Pizza? Don't feel bad, nobody else is reading pizza articles when they're hungry.

When your furnace goes out do you read articles about furnaces? Again, nobody else is reading furnace articles, they simply call a repair man.

You're assuming the entire world wants to read an article from Forbes which isn't happening in real life.

If you want to earn money from SEO as soon as possible, consider

    Authority
    Consistency
    Uniqueness
Low search volume keywords as well as low competitive keywords
Commenting on related blogs, forum, videos, social pages etc.

I think a lot of SEO is about doing research about your adience (keywords), create content around those keywords.

So, it's both a very creative job (writing quality and relevant content) and analytical (doing your research, onpage seo).

I have not learned about off-page much yet. That will come soon enough.

SEO is not an easy business. It cant be acquire in a short period of time, yes you'll learn everything about it but that doesn't mean you'll be good at it. It requires skills, patience and great motivation! You have to be a one tough cookie to be good or even great on it. Just a reminder, focus on doing an all white hat seo.

Just putting keywords in H1 and H2 will not get you to page 1, there are many other factors involved.

I'm pretty sure you are not aware of the 'hot' stuff going around about SEO and you need to learn more about it. The best thing that works in Google in 2015 and onwards is PBN (Private Blog Networks), just Google it and learn more about it and build yourself a PBN.

The best courses regarding SEO and PBN's that I highly highly recommend are:

1.) Bring The Fresh by Kelly Felix
2.) OMG Machines by Greg Morrison and Mike Long
3.) Source Wave by Alex Becker
4.) Source University by Alex Becker, Gregory Ortiz & Stephen Floyd

These are the best SEO courses out there and you will learn great from this list, just search for some of them in Google

    Hope it helped.

Unfortunately, there is no shortcut to becoming an SEO Specialist like all the things. You need to keep yourself updated with the best practices and ensure that you read and read. Make it a point to practice what you preach on a regular basis and you will become a professional with time. But the secret it to keep working hard to eternity.

Best seo is the way you get results. So that you can not focus on one way ticket to your goal.
With years of experience and trial & errors are best actings. Also track your competitors on kw to get an idea how to act on that island.

I would suggest you in short that be informative in what you are positing on behalf of any online business. Getting the expert title in SEO won't show that you are aware of all the tasks done in SEO. You need to know what are the possibilities of the tasks and how they can be useful to upsurge the rank of any company in the world of internet.

Try to be specialized in all the tasks so that you can be professional in this field easily and can understand what people wants from you as a SEO professional.
