Using Wikipedia to improve ranking

I was wondering if adding content to the Wikipedia page that's relevant to your niche, and then adding your URL to the "references section" would have any ranking benefit. I can see how it would possibly generate traffic to your site, if people actually click on links from the reference section. And I can see how if a Wikipedia page shows up in the 1st few positions on page 1 of the search results for your keywords, and your link is on that page, then you definitely could benefit.

As a guy who just tried to break into Wikipedia and got "speedy deleted" for a legit page, I'd say the admin nazis there may not like you trying to do that. Hey, I think the idea is great, but I'm not them.

This kind of thing can work and give you some juice, but Wikipedia may not be the best because it's so highly monitored. Keep in mind, there are thousands of Wiki sites out there where you probably could do this type of thing. Just search for "Free Wikipedia Sites List"

It doesn't give any juice, because the links are nofollow. As they should be. For people claiming that it generates a lot of traffic - I sincerely doubt that. People only click on references if they want more information on a topic, and encyclopedia is trying their best to give them a good summary on their pages.

It's possible that a scraper takes the whole page your link included, and posts that to their site. In that case you'd get a link from a dubious site.

So the answer is no, don't bother with it.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

      What's your excuse?

Wikipedia can't pass on any link "juice," so ranking from it directly is not an option. However, that doesn't mean it won't help your reputation, which does help with ranking. Wikipedia is beneficial to some extent as many people visits this site to get the info from it. It has been said that getting any info from Wikipedia is very beneficial and of top quality.

But posting links on Wikipedia would be beneficial or not can't be determined easily. This is because many of them says the info in this site can be edited by any individual and it would be not specific for what you are searching. But looking at the Page Rank of Wikipedia it can be said that adding web page URL can be beneficial to some extent and people can go through it for at least one time. This only generates huge traffic towards a site and converts them into a potential customers of a particular site quickly.

Yes, it may be nofollow but it adds a lot of credibility to your website due to Wikipedia's immense domain authority.

However, your enemy is overzealous moderators/editors on Wikipedia. You can add something that legitimately adds value but people will still delete it away..
