Hi warriors,

I would like to ask a question regarding creating backlinks.

If I would like to rank for a post, should I create backlinks to the that page/post (eg domain.com/test-post) or to the homepage (eg domain.com)

Thanks

Which do you want to rank?

If you're setting up a niche site and want the entire site to rank for the keyword, get it on the homepage and focus your links towards it.

If you create a post, base it around a keyword and send links to it.

But which do you want to rank, and for what keyword?

Each page on your site should have a specific goal.

If you want to rank any specific post of yours then you can build links to it but remember the link must come from good relevant source for example text link from any post's content body which is relevant to your post. If it is not relevant then search engines like Google can red flag you in order to manipulate their SERP's.

The specific site page you want to rank must have targeted keyword or search query to be the basis to rank for the search results.

If your internal page is linked with your main page then it will help to rank your website easily. But some point it has been seen that working on main domain only can help the website to get huge rank on all keywords in which certain strategies are employing. So, its better to rank the main domain instead of working on internal pages. It won't be too effective. Make backlinks on main domain and link all the sub pages of your website with it. It will automatically index all the links easily.

The answer lies in the question itself, you must create links to your post and not on the homepage.

For ranking your post, it is understood that you should create links to the specified post only. Besides creating links, you should share your posts on Social Media Sites too.

If particular page or post is your target then focus on that page. By creating backlinks for home page will boost all site pages if they are linked with each other.

Home page links are more important But I think pages links are not bad on the other hand sub domain links are different. If sub domain page are less that PR-2 thats not need to create backlinks there.

Building a mixture of links would be ideal, use majority of links to the home page but also build links for the inner pages of your website.

You should have your back lines pointing towards the page that you want to rank. You of course want to have a more natural back link distribution but if you want to rank for a specific keyword you may want to point the back links to the page that you want to rank for.

You should link to both Home page and inner pages. Initially link to blog posts as these links will rank your post high in search result and you will start getting some traffic.

And what if you penalized for link building (as most SEOs faced and they are facing)?

So I think it is not totally safe for building links of home page until it is too established, for the time being you can build links on posts/pages as well.

If you want to rank any particular post/page then you have to build links around that page only.

But if your are doing this to support your website then you should focus on your homepage.

Unless your internal link structure is completely messed up the links to the sub pages also help the front page and other content you link from the main menu. However, links to the front page probably don't help an individual article that much.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
