So my site is GONE for a #2-#1 keyword in rankings after updating!?

Hi,

I have reached the highest frustration level I think. This is hilarious.

I have a 3000 words post and a keyword (not so profitable anyway) that was ranking usually number 2 sometimes number 1 and 11 affiliate links in the post. I think it's a good post and so did Google until few days ago.

So I changed some products that were not selling well and after the update I am GONE. Nowhere to be found. Not even on page 15.

This is SO funny, I've been ranking for 1 year for this keyword. And suddenly the post is not good?

All my other rankings are fine.

Can someone explain what is going on?

I've really had enough of this nonsense. I may even stop this affiliate sh**.

Probably not. You only talked about an unspecified content change and drop in SERPs, and that's not really enough to analyze the situation.

It's not a drop - I am nowhere. I would have understood if I dropped to deeper page but I can't find my site for that kw anywhere.

I raised another similar kw to bigger percent but I have reversed that. Replaced some products with better ones.

In Yoast plugin these are not green (all else is green):

The keyword density is 0.1%, which is a bit low, the keyword was found 3 times.
The keyword for this page contains one or more stop words, consider removing them. Found 'for'.
The page title contains 22 characters, which is less than the recommended minimum of 40 characters. Use the space to add keyword variations or create compelling call-to-action copy.
This page has 11 outbound link(s), all nofollowed.

      What could be the reason??

      I have VANISHED.

I have no idea. There's only one kind of relevant partial factoid in your last post.

Yoast SEO shows something - so what? The focus keyword tool doesn't really do much, and keyword percentages aren't relevant.

You've edited the page, and done more than just change the products. Maybe Google noticed the changes, and now it's trying to see if your page is still relevant for the query. I've seen edited pages drop to 80+, and bounce back after a while, but nobody can say if that's going to happen here.

It might also be something completely unrelated to this content change.

Hey, there is a good chance it's because Google is recalibrating the rankings for your website because it detected a change in content. We have seen such fluctuations for our site as well after editing the website's content even slightly. We dropped temporarily then bounced right back up (or even higher as long as we keep up SEO efforts).

    So 'don't lose heart

This is REALLY strange... I even didn't think it's possible to have such a situation even after changing the whole article.. And you only changed some links.. Are you sure they are not blacklisted? The domains you link to???

      Hi,

      I think alvinchua91 is right.

Anyways I copied the article under new title and new url, what a mess. I will leave it this way and just 301 the old url.

The links go to Amazon and I ranked usually number 2 for very long time. I have done nothing wrong to be blacklisted.

      Thanks!

Hope that works for you. You're taking a bit of a hit on the Google juice by doing a redirect. I'd have waited a bit more myself.

        Who says you're blacklisted? Google?

If you go and change content it may affect your rankings. This shouldn't be a shocking revelation.

I noticed Google is being a little more "sensitive" about content changes from March this year (2015).

I don't know how big of a change you did but it is likely your case. Those 11 aff links per page might be a little problem as well.

Solution usually is a simple waiting.

Yeah, a lot of updating can hurt sites these days. It's best to make small changes over time to avoid this type of thing.

If your site as a whole is regarded by Google as a top authority site in your niche, however, making updates won't matter. Even site speed doesn't matter much when you are well established as the top dog. Many top sites update all the time and are slow loading, but they still get top rank.

You definitely over-reacted with changing the site title and url. Try to get things back to normal and wait it out.

I can suggest you to do simple and smaller changes in order to this not happenning again and you don't have to worry. Get your site as normal as it was and wait.

I am back on ranking number 2 for the old url )). I have already switched to the new one. I am not touching anything now.

So, I should have just waited.

Thanks to nettiapina for answering all the time
