Number 3 on Google good enough?

It really depends on three things:

1. the number of searches per month
2. how much time you have to spend to get to the 3rd spot
3. how good your title and description will be

You will also have to consider your landing page and the sales conversion of the product that you are promoting.

All these different elements will contribute to whether you will get profits from the traffic that you have drive to your website.

Look for the short descriptions within Google for #1 and 2# and try to be better for the first impression.

If you have a compelling title that is more attention grabbing than the other top two spots then yet go for it.

Just keep pumping those high PR backlinks at it and you will be good

Im currently selling a targetted Amazon product of which Amazon is ranking #1 followed by another high rank PR website. My website is #3 (I did this as a test specifically to see if I still can make sales) and guess what.. I DO! On google keyword tool apparantly even on broad my specific keyword im targetting (The product name) is recieving under 100 visitors a month so with statisitics taken into account Amazon recieves approx 50 a month? WELL... im recieving around 25 targetted visitors PER DAY and already im on a 7.64% Conversion rate according to Amazon. i've solt over 15 of these products ranking at #3..

So yes.. you can sell products below #1 if you need any more help you know where to find me

I've really been looking at the tradeoff between search traffic and "keywords that convert" lately. What good is ranking for "blue widgets" even with high search volume if the conversions stink? So I'm trying some keywords like "get blue widgets for free" with much lower search volume, but hopefully more conversions. We'll see.......

I'd love to be at #3 for my chosen keywords. Top of first page, are you kidding?

Of course, as Tom says, an attraction grabbing headline is needed so a good percentage of people click on your listing. And then as Zach says, good conversion. I'd personally be in heaven. The trick is then to maintain a first page position.

Don't get too excited. It only gets about 12 visitors a day for that keyword.

I am in the first position (#1) for a keyword that is searched 4000+ times per month, has a PPC cost $5 per click and yet I am not making any conversions - no single purchase since I came to #1 over the last 3-4 days. So, it can become very random.

I think it would be worth the effort, but why have you ruled out going for #1? By doing this you can secure #3 for the longer term at least.

I would never "settle" for #3, aim high, let the cards fall where they may!

Well I've got number 1 for one of my sites, but the one I can get number 3 on has Wikipedia and Amazon in the 1 and 2 spots.

Most have touched on the answer above. Without knowing your keywords & search volume it's hard to say. I would be happy to sit at 3rd for heavily searched keywords , still get to 3rd and then work on taking number 1 position. It's possible.

The search volume is not that huge, I think around 500-600 a month. I don't know the stats, but I'd imagine the number 1 spot on Google gets quite a bit more clicks than the number 2-10 spot proportionally. I also think it's highly unlikely for a new domain to overtake a site like Wikipedia or Amazon for the number 1 spot and it's hardly worth the effort with such little search volume.

If your site in a non- review site that being anywhere amongst the top 10 in google is doing well. Especially for highly competitive keywords.

If your site is a review site, it really dosen't matter, as visitors will search deeply on product reviews to find the info they are after.

Third spot allegedly gets about 10% of clicks (give or take a couple points) on average if that helps. In your case, whether your site offers something that they can't find via Wikipedia or the Amazon page will also factor into things.
