Just research the top competitors.

Study their site and the content on it, not only gaining an understanding of what content ranks best but also giving yourself a lesson to help you better understand the niche.

Study their backlink profile and marketing methods. Really dig deep in this one and try to find out how they market them selves and gain backlinks.

Spend enough time on these two and you should get yourself a decent understanding of everything you need to know.

So how would you go about gain understanding of competitor backlinks? I use raven-seo but my trial is about to expire so i dont mind trying something else for a little while.

The same applies for marketing methods... Some of the folks I work with are too broke to do ppc campaigns. So I try to come up with some holistic local marketing approaches to gain social media leverage. Now a popular social media contest is a cool way to increase backlinkings no?

I use MajesticSEO (You are going to have to pay for at least a months worth to be able to see all backlinks, but it is worth it).

Others use Ahrefs or OSE (Now just part of Moz, which I think would be pretty decent for you if you follow some of their tutorials).

I have heard a lot of this 'Moz'. Is there a way to improve my scores as per their rankings?

First search your competition with competitors and do proper off page seo technique and smo for its promotion.

Like previous users said, research your competitors websites. Also research their social media profiles, see how they market themselves and how they approach to their customers.

First and foremost competitor analysis is the prime important part and secondly the research on social media strategy keeps a high segment of importance so as to reach out to the level.
