Yes, Backlinks is one of the important factor. bcz without back links you can not get website ranking and page rank, alexa rank etc.

Alexa ranking has nothing to do with backlinks. It's a usage statistics for their browser plugin.

Actually backlinks are the only off-page SEO factor, if you think about it clearly. Yes, you can do it yourself, but you'll need to do a bit of reading about the procedures first, just in case you're a newbie.

If you got top spot without creating backlink it means the keyword was not competitive other wise it would be a nightmare without backlink. Now all I suggest is use some legit methods to get backlinks like guest posting. use local sites. Google Plus page etc.

Backlinks are important but Google doesnt owe the same value to it as it was earlier. Moreover, there are some new updates from Google which one should take care like:
- responsiveness of websites
- mobilegeddon
- meta tag optimization
- Optimized internal links
- Text Formatting (use of h1,h2,bold etc)
- Image optimization (image size, proper image names, use of ALT tag)
- Create User friendly 404 pages
- add Google Authorship verification for all pages
- Create top quality fresh content (This is always the most important SEO factor!)
- Add External links (no broken links or links to 'bad' sites)
- Decrease page loading time
- Give H1 tag to page Title
- Create robots.txt for website
- Add data highlighter
