A simple start to every link-building campaign

So this seems like the most asked question on this sub forum, so I will explain how I start every single link building campaign I work on. Baring in mind, this requires access to a paid service, so you will need to invest a little.

It's quick and easy to start, so let us get started!

First, something you should have done already (if not, do it now), keyword research. If you don't know anything about keyword research, here is a good guide for you. When you have your targeted keywords, go ahead and stick them into Google. Browse through the rankings on page one, and pick out three website (ones that aren't the big dogs like Amazon and Wikipedia) that best represent where you would like to be, and save them somewhere.

Now time to stalk them. Realistically, you should now study everything about this website, from their content to their layout. However since this is about link building, we will ignore those for now.

What you want to do is go to either ahrefs, MajesticSEO or OSE and stick the URL of the first of the three sites in the search box, and have a look at what comes up. With a paid membership to one of the above services, you can now look at all the backlinks that this competitor of yours has. You can see what site is linking to them, what page is being linked to and what page the link is coming from.

What to do with this information? Well, now is where the fun but hard work begins. Start with the first link - usually the most valuable. Open it up (both the page the link is coming from, and the page it is linking to). Figure out how your competitor got that link there. Ask yourself is it possible for you to get a link there as well? Most of the time, the answer is yes. But it requires some effort. If you are lucky, it will simply be a case of emailing the webmaster, or blog owner, and asking them to link to your site as well. However in most cases, you will need to try and poach that link. See the content that is being linked to, read it, learn where it lacks and could be improved, and write something better. Then, contact the webmaster or blog owner, and point out that the article that they are linking too is either outdated, lacking information or could be better, and then direct them to your much improved article.

Yes, sadly, all of this requires doing actual work. But it pays off. This will allow you to match your competitor link for link (in theory, although that requires hard work, more than most people are willing to put in). At the end of the day, if your competitor has a link on a particular site, so can you. Just figure out how. Once you've done this for the first competitor, do it for the second, and then third! There is enough work here to keep you busy for months.

Hopefully this is helpful to some people. I am pretty damn tired right now so if I have missed anything out of things aren't clear, just ask away and I will try clear it up.

Which is great unless their domain is more trusted than yours, in which case all that work is pointless.

And why do you think their domain would be more trusted? Could that possibly be to do with the quality, relevancy and authority of all the sites that are linking to it? Sounds about right. How could you possibly compete against that? By gaining the same links as they have...

Sorry but I am struggling to understand the point you are trying to make here. You're pretty much stating that you think gaining strong backlinks from authority websites is "pointless"?

Edit: Just noticed you're sig. No wonder you're preaching against free methods to gain strong links. You are selling a Web 2.0 creation service.

Why would all that work be wasted?

Worst case scenario, you move up in ranks but end up at #2. #2 is less than #1 but not a waste.

And, trust in Google is based on what site links to you. If you're getting all their backlinks, you'll have the exact same trust, less the age of your domain (if you're new). Which you counter with better onpage SEO or a few extra links from other good sources.
