Gathering Keywords that can generate Traffic

I had been asked this question many times that 'how to gather keywords in a very high competitive market?'. So, I will be giving a brief scenario for these things here today.

A blog which has a huge keywords base say about 20,000 will always drive much traffic no matter what happens so the primary focus must be on developing a good keywords base that can actually get ranked in the SERP's.

Gathering Keywords : Suppose if we take an example of this niche which is 'Digital Marketing'. How you are going to find keywords which actually matters? The answer to that is first divide the entire field in various sections (i.e, sub-fields) such as SEO, SMO, Affiliate Marketing, Email Marketing etc.

Secondly, in those fields find out which are the most popular keywords. Make a list of those keywords under those sub-fields such as under SEO it will have Keyword Research, Link Building, Guest Posting etc or under Email Marketing it will have say Best Email Marketing Software’s, Tips for Email Marketing etc.

In the third step, you have to categorize those keywords. Use any good Keywords Research Tool such as Google Keyword Planner to do it. Categorize those keywords in three sections which are Highly competitive, Medium and Low competitive. I know that it can be a frustrating process but trust me it is worth your time and hardwork.

Fourth step. Once you have sorted the list don't go for the high competitive keywords first go for the low and mid competitive keywords. For each of those keywords, search for posts which are already been posted. Atleast look onto the first 5 pages of the search engines. I know that Google is the Big Boy of this industry but while searching for posts my suggestion is that you use Bing and other search engines also. Analyze those posts for each keywords which have maximum content gaps (information that have not been provided in any post for any specific keyword). Target for the keywords which have maximum content gaps first. And build content for them specifically focusing on the content gaps.

Note: Keyword Research is an art. You can also rank high for the mid or even high competitive keywords. Oh Yeah !! its totally possible. Many webmasters just manipulate the original keyword with alternate keywords or adding adjacent relevant keywords to the original ones. Here is list of adjacent keywords which can be added to almost all keywords and can be manipulated to get ranked well.

- 'Free'
- 'Top 10/100' or even more
- 'Best of'
- '________ alternatives'
- 'Tutorial'
- 'Review'
- 'Download'
- 'Free Download'
- 'Free service'
- 'Free Trial'
- 'How to'
- 'Step by Step Guide'
- 'Basic steps'
- 'Sale'
- 'Promotion'

I hope that this helps you all. Feel free to correct me anytime if I am wrong.

Very informative, thank you. I'm building an online-shop right now and I struggled big time with keyword research. What I finally did was very similar to your suggestions but I didn't categorize in the beginning. Instead I gathered a big list using related searches and keywordtool.io (because I needed German umlauts and ubersuggest is not too good with that). Then I used Google Keyword Planner and downloaded the excel file. I added a column at the end with a score (I used (monthly searches/sqrt(competition))*suggested bid, but this is just what came to my mind).
Then I sorted the keywords by score (descending) and started to categorize them by type and intent (using this types and this intents until I got bored (I had a lot of keywords).
Only after that I used your subfields (I called it category) for each type/intent pair and had another column with the subject.
It was a bit tedious but after that my content strategy was pretty clear, meaning now I know which articles I have to write.
Hope that was not to weird and helps a little.

I have been following your procedure so I have a query for you. Will it be advantageous to go for a keyword first which have high competition but has a huge content gap in it, which I can fill??

  • Thanks for the tips! I'm doing the same thing as well. Aside from gathering keywords and arranging them on your website, I am also researching for topics under those keywords- topics that are related, up-to-date, and most importantly, articles that have gone viral. This will make it easier for me to plot my web content as well as articles that I will be promoting to 3rd party sites.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. Targeting keywords which are trending and mostly shared & viewed recently can get maximum exposure. But the fact must be kept in mind that the content has to exclusively unique and up to-date.

Aside from Google Keyword Planner tool, are there other websites or platforms that can considered as one of the basis in getting the best keyword phrase for your site?

If you are asking about Google Keyword planner alternative then I will strongly recommend Wordstream Keyword Tool.

Plan/Suggestion is excellent but need to implement properly. Most of the workers know how to do, but most of them don't implement things in exact way. Proper planning and implementation in time is the core of success.

I look at the search pages and how much advertising is on the pages

if you go back a few pages and see lots of advertising I pretty much look at this as a good keyword because the PPC people in general have tested those keywords for conversions, traffic means nothing if your looking for conversions
