There are plenty of discussions and debates going on everyday webmasters world about how to reduce bounce rate of one's site. People share their experiences about how do they do it so I am sharing some tips which I had found useful.

Design & Theme : Design and Theme of a site depend tremendously on its bounce rate. A clearly navigable design along with a theme which is simple yet attractive will always increase users engagement to the site reducing its bounce rate.

Loading speed : No body likes a site which takes a long time to load. It just irritates the visitors. Its does not mean that only your lading page have to load faster. Maybe your landing page loads faster but your other pages does not load good then no matter what happens your bounce rate will still be high. Make sure each and every page of your site loads smoothly.

Navigation : Suppose a visitor comes to your site for information which he/she needs to find but they didn't find it in the landing page. So, what they are going to do? They are going to search for it in your site. In order them to find the information the navigation of your site has to be very good so that users who is completely new to your site can also attain ability to get what he/she wants.

Internal Linking : I, myself focus on this element very much. Bounce rate couldn't be lowed if a user visits on a single page of your site, he/she have to visit multiple pages. How can you do that? The answer short and simple by 'internal linking'. I use this technique in each and every blog of mine. Internal linking can be done by having a universal column in a blog which will show the most 'popular topics' and /or 'recent topics' or putting relevant links in the content body. I also prefer putting links of related posts at the end of my each blog posts so visitors who like my posts can also visit them and reduce my bounce rate as well.

Call to action in landing page : Create call to action elements in the landing page such as signup forms, short surveys, allure them to visit another page by showing free stuff such as ebook, free service, free trial service etc.

Mobile usability : Today major portion of the visitors comes from mobile so make sure your site is mobile optimized. Remember users experience is very important to have engagement so make sure your mobile site loads even in a very weak internet connection also.

Segmenting Content : Segmenting a content structure or blog post is a very clever way to reduce bounce rate but it should be done very wisely or else it may backfire. The trick is to cut up your long blog posts in number of sections or parts and then post them one by one along with very interconnected internal links.

I feel other than loading speed, navigation and mobile friendliness, the key to lowering bounce rates is to make sure that you market only to suitable demographics on social media or SEO it only for terms which are highly relevant for your business and is geo-specific if it's a local business.

Reducing bounce rate only concerns with the site's page content. If the users doesn't satisfied with the page then they will find another page until it meet their needs. So its the best way is to provide interesting and beneficial story for the targeted audience.

I'm not a big fan of content segmenting, just because it annoys the hell out of me. Sure, you need to segment your article to one or two pages. It's fine, as long as you don't divide your content to five pages while your website takes too much time to load.

As for internal linking, it has positive implications for SEO as well...and it increases PR, I think.

  • Create permanent links that will remain for longer time. If you create links that are going to be vanished soon then your site might get up and down in rankings. White hat seo is best for this. Do not spamming in forums. According to me ban in forums do effects in bouncing of the website.

Also important to stop targeting keywords/ marketing channels which send low value traffic

If your website is getting the traffic which has nothing to do with the products/services you sell then the website visitors are going to bounce the moment they arrive on your website. Determine the traffic sources which are sending poor quality traffic and then either stop the campaign or target the right keywords/ landing pages.

I would like to mention one more thing here that is your contents display first instead of ads when people visits on your site otherwise they will simply leave the site.

No, they do not. They don't have any means to track it for most sites in the first place, but it would also be a really poor ranking factor. Bounce rate tells absolutely nothing about the site without context. You need to know why the bounce rate is high to be able to tell wether it matters. A high-ranking article or successful social media campaign can increase bounce rate because visitors only come for one piece of content.

I find it likely that Google would track the bounces back to their search engine, but that's not the same thing.
