New website or piggyback?

I've been trying to find an answer to this online with zero luck, so I thought I'd throw it out here...

I have a hiking blog that I've picked away at (mostly as a hobby) for 3 years and it gets a little bit of traffic (maybe 75-100 unique hits a day from organic search). Never really took that site too seriously though as a money-maker.

But now I've found a unique photography niche that I'm confident would interest readers of my hiking blog -- and my research shows it has much better earning potential (affiliate, ebook sales etc).

So my question is: from an SEO point of view, should I create a brand new website just focused on this photography niche?

Or should I try to blend the photography content into the hiking blog itself to snatch up some of the traffic it's getting...while also taking advantage of that older domain? So maybe by adding a photography section.

Thanks for your help!

The first thing I would do is try & make a few sales on the old site. Prove the existing traffic will buy.

If the photography is related to hiking, then put it on the same site. If it's unrelated to hiking, I would recommend you to put it on a new site.

Thanks for your advice. Makes sense. Yes, the photography niche is related to hiking -- but I'm wondering if after a while my "hiking" blog will eventually be filled with photography content because that's where I think the best opportunities are.

So a year from now I end up with a hiking-focused domain that's loaded with content that's predominantly about photography (even if it is related to hiking).

      Thanks.

I would do an in-depth keyword research on the photography niche, then get a new domain and use some keywords in the name of the new domain. Then I would go crazy & write unique content around some good long-tail keywords... which should start bringing in search engine visits. From an SEO standpoint you should absolutely get a new domain and SEO the heck out of it.

For your hiking site, I would just put in information or ads that point people to your photography site -

That's what I would do anyway, good luck!
