    Use SEF friendly URLs, not sure if they are in core joomla, or you need a plugin but make sure they have them.

    Make sure you can/do enter different meta tags for each page to avoid duplication issues.

    Build backlinks to your site as you would with any other type of site.

    Personally I wouldnt use Joomla, I have heard that its very vulnerable to attacks and depending on the type of site you are actually creating it could end up constantly crashing, which will give you downtime, one of the worst things for SEO

        I have site created using joomla in the number one position for their keywords and it's been there for years with no problem. here is one platinummassage dot com it has seo friendly urls and now joomla has made it built in. Any site can be hacked joomla is no exception but also not easier. Thats just one site

    Turn on SEF and apache mod rewrite( Inside Global Config ) ( default inside Joomla 1.5x )

    You can also use an extension to get more out of it
