New Site Sinking in SERPs and Disappearing

I've seen my sites nosedive for one reason or the other, but never seen anything like this. I was holding at #180 and then started to move up...w/in two days I was at #125. Then the site plummeted to #395 and then dissapeared from the SERPs for a day or so, then come back into the SERPs a day later around #390, go up a little, maybe to #350, and disappear from the SERPs again. Two days later it appeared again at around #395. I've seen it do this once before w/ another site, but not keep on appearing and disapearing in the SERPs. Just wondering if you guys have experienced this with your own sites before.

I'm still doing the backlinking just about every day...so I'm not sure what's going on.

Also, this is a new site - but I haven't seen anything like this for a new site before. I can see getting sandboxed - but this seems like Google is going crazy.

I experienced the same thing with my site. Thou its new too but one thing is certain, links do fluctuate.
Am currently on PR1, there was a time my site wasn't ranked at all. I got worried and posted lots of question on the forum regarding backlink and PR.

In my own opinion just do the needful but don't let this too bother you. Nobody really knows how google ranks a site except for the basic we all know.

I wonder whether this can be related to the whole naked-affiliate link penalty PPC advertisers are feeling...

Depends on what kinds of SEO efforts you used before it all happened. Could be a good thing (the "Google Dance"), or could be that Google was suspect of the rate at which you backlinked. Since this is a new site, it may be a matter of Google feeling it out as it gets to know your pages and content. I'd keep on doing what you're doing, and wouldn't worry for now. See where things are in a week or two, I have a feeling they'll improve.

Start building some trusted links.. if you've been building a lot of links to a new site, especially pre-index, I'd recommend a good high visibility press release as some camo to make those links look a bit more natural. You'll want to balance out the link profile a bit, make sure you're not getting all of your links from one source such as directories, as this REALLY isn't natural. It's all about leaving the smallest thumbprint available.

Afterthought: Make sure if you're going to do this to maintain the speed at which you build links... I've seen several sites get dropped to 100+ due to sporadic link velocity.

I've had some newly built sites rank in the top 3 after only a week or so, and then disappear completely. It may be because I spend a day building a bunch of links and then pretty much stop completely. Although I only build around 50 links in that day, and I know it takes G a few days to index them. I also only target low competition keywords though.

I have a question and I think it may help the thread OP as well: If this happens to your site, and you start building links again, will you see yourself come back close to your original ranking? Or has the big G already penalized you in some way?

My problem is I only target keywords that have really low competition so they usually have minimal amount of searches as well, so spending more than a day or two building links isn't really worth it. I'm hoping it's just the G dance and eventually the sites will get back somewhere in the top 10 eventually.

If it's new and it is a competitive niche (sounds like it is if you are dropping into the 300s) then it is nothing more than the Google Dance. It will likely be several months before it settles in.

My backlinking has a good impact on my existing sites, just not on my new ones. I have four new domains (less than a month old) and Google is simply not paying attention. i'm assuming its the google dance.

I notice a significant jump in SERPs about every 6 months my sites age. The placements also become more stable with age in what I have seen.

So just keep pumping and be patient, your time will come.
