Selecting target country to google search console

I have not set my target country for my site in the google webmaster tools search console. I would like some help regarding whether I should. My site is in English only, but I am not looking to target any specific country. I assume since I current have no location set, google is using my host's location (in U.S.) to determine the target location. Should I set the location to "unlisted" if I don't care what country my traffic comes from?

Thanks!

You should set the preferred target country because it does help with rankings. It doesn't mean you'll be dropped out of other countries.. It just means Google will know who the main crowd is that your content is written for. If the domain extension is for a specific country (for example, co.uk) then it won't even give you the option and the country will be automatically assigned based on the country code extension.

I have mine set for US because that's where I'm located at, that's where most of my traffic should be coming from, and those who are people who would read and understand my writing, It doesn't mean I don't get search traffic from India, Spain, Netherlands, UK..etc... It just means that is who my main target audience is.

Yeah, exactly. Setting up a target country makes sense if we are talking about non geo tlds like .mobi or if you have .de domain and want to rank in US.

I was worried about dropping in rank in other countries because I still want to rank well in English speaking countries other than the U.S. Thank you for your help!
