Hey Warriors,

So when I first launched my blog, I tried ranking for a low competition keyword that had a pretty good search volume, I couldn't rank though.. After making around 20 articles, unique, and seo optimized (all good rating with seo yoast although I don't find yoast useful) I still couldn't rank..

Now I last week I wanted to see if I could rank for anything other than my website name so I picked a keyword for 20 searches and super low competition, the phrase was:
running for fitness and weight loss

The article is below if you wish to read it or look at it. I have made a 2.0 website along with a few facebook shares from friends, and a good set of quality backlinks of around 15 that I made myself from high PR sites..

well I still did not rank, anyone know why??

I know that ranking isn't easy at all, but with no competition why cant I rank?

blog article: Running for Fitness and Weight Loss • The Qce

QUICK EDIT: my website isn't getting any traffic whatsoever, so if you can help me understand why I rank for nothing or why I don't get traffic I would appreciate it.

Yours is a badly written article that shouldn't rank.

But, if the competition is super low and you're not ranking it must be because your SEO skills are nil.

Or, maybe, the competition isn't super low.

Your articles are not unique (in the sense of one-of-a-kind; they're not unique in the sense of different, either.)

You must be using 'unique' in the copyscape-says-it's-unique kind of way...

By which standards are you rating it as bad? I'm wondering so I can do better, can search engine know this since it's a bunch of algorithms, I am sure it is very low competition. When you extract keyword from google planner it gives you percentage of competition not just a low medium high rank, but a 0-100 ranking. the keyword I want to rank for has like 2% competition. 10-40 being low, 40-70 medium, more is high, less than 10 is no competition I think.
So what should I try to rank, problem is I just want to rank for anything now to see if I can, even if the keyword has 0 searches every month, but at this rate I will not be ranking for another 100 years.. I'm not even in the top 200!!!

        The English is bad, convoluted.

There's no new ideas, not an engaging article.

The competition in Google is for adwords people, not for SEO.

I agree with this, and I'm not even a native speaker. There's a lot of weird word choices that almost make the article feel like it was spun. It's nowhere near the worst examples I've seen (the ones I call gibberish), but it's not fluent either.

Also, the layout of the text is not good. There's a huge wall of text. Some white space between paragraphs (or bullets) would help.

As DABK said, this kind of article is not unique. I don't even know this niche, and I'm willing to bet that there are dozens of authoritative running sites with beginner articles like this. Having the order of words in your article as unique means absolutely nothing. Google is able to go much further than that in their analysis.

Added: You know that Runner's World has an article that's got basically the same content but is written way better, right?

Majestic only sees 4 backlinks for your domain, and they're all nofollow. This would be a big problem for your rankings. Majestic's index is probably not entirely up to date, but you need good backlinks. "High PR" means nothing if you don't get a "followed" link.

BTW, the domain is only one month old, so it's completely normal to not see a lot of progress at this point. You're being impatient.

What do you mean by "unique content"? Should this blogger come up with an entirely unique take on running? Even if he/she did, how exactly would that help?

No matter how "unique" the ideas within the article would be it would still likely use the same kind of vocabulary than another "less unique" article on a more authoritative site. Yes, good keywords research can help, but then you're probably targeting a search query that has less competition.

As far as actually optimizing your site I would follow these basic on-page optimization steps:

    1) Do keyword research and find several dozen phrases that apply to you
    2) Choose several long-tail (i.e. 3+ word phrases) that are HIGHLY targeted
    3) Optimize (but don't over-optimize) each of your top level pages for a phrase
    4) Use the chosen phrase for your internal navigational links to that page

There are hundreds of full blown books and courses on each of these two techniques (link outreach and content marketing) and it's not something I can cover in a forum reply, but learning about these from trusted authorities on the subjects would be your best approach.

    Best of luck!

Can't he just build some backlinks from high PR pages?

Why do they have to be SEO backlinks? What's that?
