It depends. I run a few different sites that receive virtually zero traffic from search engines, yet they receive upwards of 1000 visitors per day. I don't need search engines for those particular brands since virtually all of my traffic comes from direct type in and social media.

It depends on the type of business you are running. If I'm a lawyer, I'm not going to brag that nobody can find me in Google.

For most IM'er type sites it is fine. Most brick and mortar businesses cannot go Google independent.

Well, if I'm a lawyer (ego, God complex, etc, etc) and I can get my name a household one without bowing down to Google, I'm all over it.

Google will never be irrelevant (it better not be, I own stock in it) but my hope is that either it turns away from letting WebMD and mega-authority sites rule page 1, OR it starts to get really personal with city-specific results favoring local biz (ie. mom n' pop) and not national ones.

They are never going to get away from letting authority sites "rule page 1". That would be an incredibly stupid business move for them. If I am searching for a remedy for some ailment, I would much rather get an answer from WebMD than some stupid little IM'er site trying to get me on their list or sell me an eBook.

You often see authority sites on page 1 because that is what Google's users want.

And they already do give a ton of local results for most searches where it makes sense to.

This is a very good point. I'm sure many people don't use the search engines and they just jump around from social link to social link. I never really thought about this until your post! All this time, many of us think SEO SEO SEO, and we need to remember to be social, too!

I think we all need to make sure we are at least reachable through the many social sites out there. Also make sure our content can be shared - it only takes one little click to start the viral ignition.

No No No. Search engines will always have to have a method of sorting through the mess. It may be a bit harder now for us to play games with Google.

SEO is something very important , because Google based on SEO to Ranking all webpages and webblog around the internet . and most of 75% of websites in the internet received traffic from search engines .

Why Google SEO is very defficult ?? , The answer is very simple , its because copied content , there is no original content , and also the new Google Updates Based on Original Content means (Content = More Traffic = more Cash $$)

SEO still works...but you have to make sure, that you provide valuable content and it also has to be unique content. If you try to cheat the system with blackhat, greyhat or other methods, google will penalize your domain...

And the more valuable content you spread around, the more exposure you get and the more money you will make

SEO is not dead but the methods are altered.
You cannot simply create links on the web and rank your website. Now you need to be social and generate quality content that is shareable. It will provide you best results in SEO.

    everything is relative

some niches far as I am concerned are dead

for instance many of the professional niches like medicine, finance and so forth are dead in general
what I find Google is picking Authorities in these niches

would you like to get medical advise by a Doc, Hospital or someone who was able to rank their website at the top, that's what I mean by dead to the public

but many niches are still open to us to participate

But, if you did SEO, you'd have more traffic. Of course, you're not doing SEO because SEO is dead, like Mike said, no sites are ranking in Google anymore and neither you, nor anyone else, has ever gone to Google or some other search engine and typed in a keyword, a phrase, looking for a website that has answers.

SEO is dead, people. All of you, stop doing SEO and me and Mike will be the only idiots doing it and we will not get any of the tens of thousands of searchers each days. I'm promising you, we will not, we will let them be.

On a more serious note, just because it is possible to get traffic through facebook or direct mail does not mean that you can't do it with SEO or press releases or telemarketing.

      It's really that simple.

If you're smart, instead of saying this form of marketing is dead, you'll learn how to do it. Because, so far, the only people I've heard saying SEO is dead, internet marketing is dead, direct mail is dead are people who did it badly and, instead of concluding that they don't know how to do it, concluded that IT is dead.

Thereby, reducing their ability to make more money.

So, instead of saying it's dead, learn how to do it well (or better) and benefit.

OP, before posting another thread about something being dead, do a search on the forum, many people have already started such a thread long before you came along.

seo aint dead.. but you mention social etc.. they are all part of seo..

    - onpage
    - offpage links
    --> social
--> authoritive type site (web 2.0 etc)
    --> video
    + others..

They all make up seo nowadays... not just social or video etc..

this is where a lot of people get confused..

Well, their SEO methods may indeed be "dead". There's several popular backlink "strategies" that will yield no results, but that people apparently still try to use.

"SEO is dead" is a common topic that surfaces at least every six months in some blog or business rag. Why? Well, it's still sort of click-baity even though this horse has been dead for years.

SEO is alive and well. It has just changed a lot in value. It is one tool in the tool box that good marketers use. It used to be the big tool but now it is an average size tool to be used in conjunction with all the other tools in your toolbox. The days where the only thing you need to get a site ranked was SEO but with the rise of social media SEO is not nearly as important. Still important but not as important. Me personally , I will take traffic anyway I can get it.

I feel like SEO is almost literally no different than it was a few years ago. The concepts of integrating social activity is based on marketing principles, not based on the technical aspects of driving search traffic organically. SEO can still stand as an autonomous source of traffic quite easily without any so called social "signals" being involved. It is also the case that social media is not even the most effective method for promoting content. On top of that social media traffic has a very low conversion rate in my experience, unless you are engaging users one at a time which is not scalable.
From a marketing perspective, you want to access your target audience with the greatest penetration possible, and with social media being so widely used as it is it is obvious to leverage these platforms to build your brand.
While having a co-witnessed marketing message is essential in any successful campaign that correlates across multiple channels, these are still distinct channels which should individually justify their own efforts through provable ROI.
The concept of mixing channels arbitrarily is far more prevalent in marketing today than most marketer's ability to successfully integrate multiple channels into a holistic program in which all channels are still individually producing results.

SEO is nowhere near dead. whats dead is the spammy SEO methods that take no brain power to accomplish. now you actually have to do something that some people have never herd of its called... "work" its all about creating valuable original content, and building quality backlings. as long as google is around seo will be alive. sure things change in the industry but professionals adapt to the environment and keep pushing forward while others give up.

If you think SEO is just about manipulating you way to the top of search engine rankings, then SEO is already dead for you. However, for those who believe that SEO is all about improving their site's visibility in the search engine results pages using the guidelines provided by the search engine algorithms, then SEO will continue to live for you.

People are always going to use search engines to look for stuff so I don't think that it will ever die. It's just a whole lot harder to rank your website these days. Social networks like Facebook and Google+ has made it easier for SEO.

It also depends on your niche as well. Micro-niches tend to rank easy and quick but if you're in the health and fitness niche for example, you're dealing with a lot of competition.

It is very premature to think SEO trend is over. Even though social media is slowly becoming more effective as that of SEO, things mostly depend up on the type of business you are dealing with. But search engines like Google still gives more importance to SEO compared to any other forms of marketing and brand visibility techniques. If you are looking to build a good online presence for your website, then only SEO can make it happen for you. However if your business is more about word-of-mouth campaign and referrals, then social media would be enough for you.

Search Engines Will Never Die. The issue is, how effective will search engine optimization be for advertisers? There is millions and millions of companies battling daily to achieve the best search engine results. In my opinion, I have never thought SEO was very effective in attracting new members to my websites. But yet again, I'm not an SEO expert. I use SEOProfiler to improve my results, and trying to look at competitors backlinks, etc.

I've always used the fundamentals and thats placing ads on websites that have similar products, service, and/or business models as my website, which is TrafficAdPays.com.
